ICF Sets New Benchmark In Coach Manufacturing With Record Output

CW Bureau ·

Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the production arm of Indian Railways, has reinforced its position as a global rail manufacturing powerhouse by clocking its highest-ever annual output of 3,007 coaches in 2024–25, surpassing the previous year’s production of 2,829 coaches. The milestone underlines Chennai-headquartered  ICF’s ability to scale output while simultaneously transitioning towards next-generation rolling stock, energy efficiency and sustainability-led manufacturing.

Innovation-led production mix drives growth

A key highlight of the year was the production of 1,169 DPRS coaches, accounting for nearly 40% of total output, signalling a clear strategic shift towards technologically advanced, passenger-centric designs. Despite rising product complexity and diversification, ICF demonstrated strong execution capabilities, producing 1,484 coaches between August and December 2025 alone. The factory has already delivered 17 Amrit Bharat rakes, catering to India’s growing demand for modern, affordable intercity rail travel. This sustained momentum comes even as Indian Railways accelerates the transition from conventional coach designs to high-performance trainsets and EMU platforms.

National recognition for quality excellence

ICF’s operational and quality leadership was formally acknowledged with the “UTTKRISHTA GUNAVATTA – Best Production Unit Award 2024–25”, presented by the Minister for Railways at a ceremony in New Delhi. The award reflects ICF’s success in maintaining high manufacturing standards amid rising production volumes and tighter delivery timelines.

Vande Bharat Sleeper: expanding India’s premium rail footprint

Adding to its innovation credentials, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, designed by ICF and manufactured by BEML, was flagged off by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 17 January 2026 for operations on the Howrah–Kamakhya route. The train brings together world-class comfort, advanced safety systems and modern passenger amenities, marking a major step in upgrading long-distance overnight rail travel in India. Meanwhile, major projects including the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper rake and Amrit Bharat Version 3.0—which combines AC and non-AC coaches—are progressing steadily, reflecting a clear pipeline of future-ready rolling stock.

Strong pipeline for EMUs and Amrit Bharat 3.0

During the current financial year, ICF has lined up production of two rakes of Amrit Bharat 3.0, featuring a mixed AC and non-AC configuration, three rakes of 15-car EMU trains for Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR), two EMU rakes equipped with automatic doors, aligned with urban and suburban mobility needs. This diversified portfolio positions ICF as a critical enabler of Indian Railways’ capacity expansion across intercity, suburban and premium segments.

Sustainability milestones strengthen Net Zero roadmap

Beyond production, ICF has made measurable progress on sustainability. Through focused water conservation initiatives, the factory reduced fresh water consumption by 14%. It also generated 18.65 million units (MU) of renewable energy, exceeding its total industrial electricity consumption of 11.92 MU, effectively making ICF a net renewable energy contributor. The installation of two solar-powered EV charging stations and multiple energy-efficient upgrades further underscores ICF’s commitment to Net Zero Carbon Emissions and electric mobility, aligning with Indian Railways’ broader decarbonisation goals.

Strategic significance

ICF’s 2024–25 performance highlights a critical transformation underway in India’s rail manufacturing ecosystem—from volume-driven production to innovation-led, sustainable and export-ready manufacturing. As Indian Railways accelerates network modernisation, ICF’s ability to balance scale, quality, technology and green manufacturing will remain central to the sector’s long-term competitiveness.
