With $75-Mn Investment In India, ABB To Scale Up Manufacturing And R&D

ABB has announced plans to invest $75 million in India in 2026 to expand its manufacturing footprint and research and development (R&D) capabilities.

The investment builds on more than $35 million spent in 2025 and is in line with ABB’s continued push to strengthen its ‘local-for-local’ strategy in India. Currently, nearly 85% of the products and solutions sold by ABB in the country are manufactured locally, highlighting the company’s strong focus on domestic production and localisation.

The new capital infusion will support growth across ABB’s core business areas, electrification, motion and automation, while also enabling the company to tap rising demand from sectors such as energy transition, digital infrastructure and transportation.

According to ABB CEO Morten Wierod, the investment is part of the company’s long-term strategy to expand in one of its fastest-growing markets. “This investment in India is an important part of our strategy to support infrastructure build-out and growth in one of our fastest-growing markets,” he said.

Wierod noted that demand is accelerating across several sectors, including energy transition projects, grid modernisation, data centre expansion, and metro and high-speed rail infrastructure. Expanded facilities in India will not only meet domestic demand but also strengthen the company’s ability to serve regional markets.

ABB’s new investments will be spread across several key locations, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nashik and Vadodara. Together, the projects are expected to create around 300 new skilled jobs in engineering, operations and research.

In Bengaluru, ABB will invest $14 million in its Nelamangala Campus 1 and 2 facilities to strengthen localization and expand production. The company plans to introduce new technology ranges in 2026, including advanced electrical protection and enclosure solutions. A key component of the investment will be scaling up converter manufacturing to support India’s rapidly growing sustainable mobility sector, particularly metro and high-speed rail networks.

The newly built Nelamangala Campus 2 will also support a tenfold increase in production of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions and house dedicated R&D operations. The facility will include advanced rectifier manufacturing, excitation and blending systems, and integrated gas analyser system production.

Another $21 million will be invested in ABB’s Peenya operations in Bengaluru, aimed at expanding manufacturing capacity for low-voltage drives and specialised motors, including flameproof motors, roller-table motors and large smoke-venting motors. The site will also receive an innovation lab, upgraded remote monitoring and diagnostics capabilities, and new training facilities.

In Hyderabad, ABB is developing a multi-phase R&D hub. The first phase includes $12 million in investments during 2026, covering relocation of operations to a new 12,400-square-metre office and laboratory space. A second phase will involve the construction of a state-of-the-art high power laboratory on ABB-owned land, which will serve as a key centre for engineering and research.

Meanwhile, in Nashik, ABB will invest $22 million to expand production of indoor and outdoor circuit breakers while enlarging its Vacuum Interrupter manufacturing facility. The site will also focus on localizing 33kV primary gas insulated switchgear and developing SF6-free technologies by 2028.

In Vadodara, the company plans to invest $6 million to expand its manufacturing footprint, particularly for slow-speed synchronous generators and induction motors used in industries such as metals, oil and gas, cement and wind power. The facility will also add a new training center and enhanced service workshop.

ABB has been present in India for 76 years and has invested more than $230 million over the past decade to strengthen its manufacturing and innovation capabilities in the country.

In 2025, ABB’s India operations generated over $1.5 billion in revenue, representing around 4% of the global group’s total revenue. The company employs more than 10,000 people across India and operates nearly 25 manufacturing, distribution and operating facilities, along with five major R&D centres.
