India’s largest hospitality company, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), has announced the signing of a new Taj Hotels property in Guwahati, marking the debut of the iconic luxury brand in Assam’s capital. The agreement was signed in the presence of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, underlining the state government’s focus on strengthening tourism and hospitality infrastructure.
The upcoming Taj hotel will feature 250 keys, created through a combination of renovating and repositioning an existing 150-room property and adding 100 new rooms as part of the expansion. The project signals IHCL’s growing confidence in the economic and tourism potential of the Northeast region.
Strengthening A Strategic Gateway
IHCL MD & CEO Puneet Chhatwal said the project reflects the company’s strong belief in the region’s growth trajectory.
He noted that Guwahati has emerged as the commercial and cultural gateway to the Northeast, and the arrival of the Taj brand will further strengthen the city’s hospitality landscape.
According to Chhatwal, as demand in the region continues to evolve, the new property will play an important role in supporting Guwahati’s emergence as a key centre for business, tourism, and cultural exchange.
An Urban Retreat Rooted in Assam
The upcoming Taj Guwahati will be located in the heart of the city on an expanded land parcel of more than nine acres. Designed as an urban retreat, the property aims to blend the brand’s signature luxury with the cultural ethos and natural charm of Assam.
The hotel will feature multiple specialty restaurants, expansive banquet and meeting facilities, and the brand’s wellness offering, J Wellness Circle. The property is expected to cater to both business and leisure travellers, while also supporting the growing demand for conferences, events, and destination experiences in the region.
Expanding IHCL’s Northeast Footprint
With the signing of this property, IHCL will have five hotels in Guwahati, including three currently under development, further strengthening its presence in one of India’s fastest-growing regional markets.
The new Taj property is expected to add significant capacity to the city’s premium hospitality segment while reinforcing Guwahati’s position as a strategic hub connecting the Northeast with the rest of India and Southeast Asia.
