West Asia Turmoil: India Further Strengthens Fuel Supply Channels

CW Bureau ·

The Union government  has stepped up preparedness measures to ensure uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and cooking gas across the country in view of the evolving geopolitical developments in West Asia. The Centre said coordinated actions are being taken across energy supply management, natural gas allocation, LPG distribution and enforcement measures to maintain stability in fuel availability.

Officials said the government is closely monitoring supply chains while working with state governments and oil marketing companies to ensure that citizens and priority sectors continue to receive adequate fuel supplies.

Refineries Operating At High Capacity

India’s refining sector continues to operate at high capacity levels to maintain stable fuel supplies. Officials said all refineries are maintaining adequate crude oil inventories, ensuring uninterrupted production of petroleum products.

The country remains self-sufficient in the production of petrol and diesel, and currently does not require imports of these fuels to meet domestic demand.

Retail Fuel Supplies Stable Across the Country

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have reported no cases of fuel dry-outs at retail outlets across the country. Supplies of petrol and diesel are being maintained regularly through the existing distribution network.

Authorities have advised citizens not to resort to panic buying, reiterating that adequate stocks of petroleum products are available nationwide.

Protected Supply For CNG And PNG Consumers

To safeguard essential energy needs, the government has prioritised gas supplies to key sectors. Officials said 100 percent supply is being maintained for piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) consumers.

However, supplies to industrial and commercial consumers are being regulated at around 80 percent to balance overall demand.

Commercial LPG users in urban areas have been encouraged to switch to PNG connections through city gas distribution networks. A review meeting chaired by senior officials of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas was held on March 14, 2026 with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board and city gas distribution companies to assess the progress of PNG connections and LPG-to-PNG conversions.

LPG Supply Remains Stable

The government said LPG supplies are being closely monitored amid the prevailing geopolitical situation. There have been no reports of LPG shortages at distributorships across the country.

Interestingly, LPG bookings have declined from 88.8 lakh on March 13 to around 77 lakh bookings on March 14, indicating easing consumer concerns. Online bookings have simultaneously increased from 84% to about 87%, reflecting growing adoption of digital platforms.

Several states and Union Territories including Bihar, Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan have also issued orders for the allocation of non-domestic LPG cylinders in accordance with government guidelines.

Commercial LPG cylinders have been placed at the disposal of state governments for priority distribution and are currently available to consumers in 30 states and Union Territories.

States Intensify Monitoring And Coordination

State governments and Union Territories have strengthened monitoring mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential fuels. High-level review meetings have been conducted in multiple states to oversee LPG distribution and prevent panic buying or hoarding.

So far, 22 states and UTs have established dedicated control rooms to monitor the availability of petrol, diesel and LPG. Several states have also initiated regular media briefings to keep citizens informed about the situation.
