Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) has flagged off the first pan-India test run of its upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV, marking the start of public road verification testing for the model in the country.

The development milestone marks a significant step in the company’s electric mobility journey as it prepares to introduce an all-new electric SUV tailored for Indian customers.

The prototype of the model, globally known as Honda 0 α, was earlier unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

Testing Across Diverse Indian Conditions

As part of the nationwide testing programme, the prototype electric SUV will be evaluated across a wide range of Indian driving conditions, including highways, urban roads and challenging terrains.

The company said the programme will focus on assessing durability, handling, ride comfort, efficiency and overall reliability of the vehicle.

Additionally, the SUV will undergo extreme heat and monsoon testing, while engineers will also evaluate its charging performance across multiple charging infrastructure setups to ensure real-world usability for Indian customers.

Honda Emphasises Localised EV Development

Honda Cars India president & CEO Takashi Nakajima said the test run marks an important step in the company’s electrification strategy.

“The start of pan-India public road verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey. India has unique driving and climate conditions, and it is important for us to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments,” he said.

Nakajima added that the programme combines Honda’s global engineering expertise with local customer insights as the company prepares to launch an electric SUV focused on reliability, comfort and ease of use.

India to Play Key Role In Global Launch

The upcoming electric SUV is being designed for both urban commuting and lifestyle-oriented driving, catering to a broad range of daily usage scenarios.

The model is planned for global introduction in FY2026–27, with India and Japan expected to be among the key markets.

Honda said the vehicle will be manufactured in India and exported to international markets, highlighting the country’s growing role in the company’s global EV strategy.
