Zydus, Torrent Partner To Co-Market Semaglutide Injection In India

CW Bureau ·

Zydus Lifesciences and Torrent Pharmaceuticals have entered into a strategic licensing and supply agreement to co-market Semaglutide injection in India, marking a significant move in the fast-growing metabolic disorders segment.

Under the agreement, Zydus will manufacture and supply the drug, while Torrent Pharma will hold semi-exclusive rights to co-market it under its own brand, Sembolic, leveraging its strong footprint in chronic therapies and extensive nationwide field force. Torrent will also pay an upfront licensing fee to Zydus as part of the deal.

Multiple Brands, Unified Innovation Platform

Zydus will market the product under its own brands Semaglyn, Mashema, and Alterme, broadening its presence in the GLP-1 segment.

At the core of the offering is an innovative formulation of Semaglutide Injection (15 mg/3 ml), delivered through a prefilled cartridge with a reusable pen device. The platform enables administration of multiple dosage strengths through a single device.

This design is expected to enhance patient convenience, improve adherence to therapy and support long-term compliance in chronic disease management.

Addressing Diabetes and Obesity Burden

Semaglutide is widely used in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, particularly in patients where standard therapies like metformin are unsuitable.

The therapy is indicated for adults with inadequately controlled Type 2 diabetes (as monotherapy or combination therapy) and chronic weight management alongside diet and physical activity.

With rising incidence of diabetes and obesity in India, demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists is witnessing strong growth.

Strategic Synergy

The partnership combines Zydus Lifesciences’ strengths in product development and manufacturing along with Torrent Pharmaceuticals’ deep market penetration and chronic therapy expertise.

Together, the companies aim to improve patient access to advanced metabolic therapies while strengthening their positions in the high-growth diabetes and obesity treatment market.

Scaling Next-Gen Therapies In India

As competition intensifies in the GLP-1 segment, this collaboration positions both companies to tap into a rapidly expanding market driven by lifestyle diseases and growing awareness of innovative treatment options.

The dual-branding strategy and differentiated delivery platform could play a key role in driving adoption and accessibility of next-generation therapies across India.
