Tata Steel Commissions ₹3,200-Cr Electric Arc Furnace In Ludhiana

CW Bureau ·

Tata Steel Ltd has inaugurated a ₹3,200-crore scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility at Hi-Tech Valley in Ludhiana, with a production capacity of 0.75 million tonnes per annum.

The plant is designed to achieve carbon dioxide emissions of less than 0.3 tonnes per tonne of steel, marking a significant step in the company’s roadmap to achieve net zero emissions by 2045.

Sustainability at the core of operations

The EAF facility will utilise nearly 50% renewable energy and rely entirely on steel scrap as raw material, reinforcing Tata Steel’s focus on sustainable manufacturing practices.

About 40% of the scrap requirement will be sourced from the company’s recycling plant in Rohtak, further strengthening its circular economy approach.

Focus on construction steel segment

The plant will manufacture construction-grade steel rebar under the flagship retail brand Tata Tiscon, enabling the company to expand its footprint in the construction segment.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Punjab Chief Minister S, Bhagwant Singh Mann, along with Tata Steel Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and CEO & Managing Director T. V. Narendran.

Leadership underscores green transition

Chandrasekaran said the facility reflects the Tata Group’s long-term commitment to building a greener and more resilient industrial future, aligning with India’s broader climate goals.

Narendran described the Ludhiana EAF as a defining milestone in Tata Steel’s net-zero journey, highlighting the company’s focus on investing in technologies that reduce resource intensity while maintaining global competitiveness.
