Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd (HMVL), part of HT Media, has decided not to on-board new subscribers to its over-the-top (OTT) platform OTTplay, citing inability to achieve sustainable profitability within the defined timeline.
Board Approves Decision To Stop Onboarding From March 31, 2026
The company in a regulatory filing said a decision has been taken by the board of directors of the company on March 26, 2026 to discontinue taking new subscribers.
“New OTTplay subscriptions packs will not be offered from March 31, 2026, while the existing OTTplay platform subscribers will continue to be supported”, the company said.
Inability to Achieve Sustainable Profitability Drives Move
HMVL further said that the reason for closure is that the company could not meet the required criteria during expected timeline for achieving sustainable long-term profitability.
The turnover of OTTplay for FY25 was at ₹59.86 crore, constituting 8% of total revenue of the company. The networth of OTTplay for FY25 turned negative at ₹8.09 crore, constituting 2% of networth of the company. It is to be noted that the networth of HMVL for FY25 stood positive at ₹ 1611.49 crore.
It is noteworthy that HMVL in its annual report 2025 said that OTTplay has emerged as India’s leading OTT ‘Super App’, offering users a seamless, one-stop platform to discover and stream content from over 25 leading OTT services.
