Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has announced the formation of the Arvind Raghunathan Centre for Theoretical Computer Science (ARtCS), backed by alumnus Arvind Raghunathan, co-founder of RoC360 and founder and Chief Executive Officer of House IQ.
The centre aims to advance the mathematical foundations of computer science through deep, curiosity-driven research and provide a dedicated platform for long-term theoretical inquiry.
Focus on foundational research
ARtCS will work towards strengthening core areas of theoretical computer science, including cryptography, computational complexity, algorithms, graph theory, logic and databases, theoretical machine learning, quantum computing and privacy in artificial intelligence.
The initiative is expected to enhance India’s presence in a field that underpins modern computational innovation.
Academic and research ecosystem
The centre will serve as an intellectual hub for students and researchers across academic levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral programmes.
It will also be guided by a distinguished advisory board comprising global experts from academia and industry.
Leadership views
“The generosity of Arvind Raghunathan and his continued commitment to the students of IIT Madras through ARtCS will advance innovative research in the field of computational science at an exciting time,” Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Director, V. Kamakoti, said.
“My transformative years at IIT Madras fostered a deep sense of curiosity, and I hope ARtCS will provide future generations access to world-class research and academic mentorship in theoretical computer science,” Arvind Raghunathan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, House IQ, said.
Advisory board
The centre is supported by an advisory board that includes Prof. Shafi Goldwasser (MIT, Weizmann, UC Berkeley), Prabhakar Raghavan (Google), Prof. Venkat Guruswamy (UC Berkeley), Ashwin (IIT-M), R. Anand (CA) and Raghunathan, among others to guide its research direction.
Background
Raghunathan is associated with RoC360, a financial services and investment platform focused on residential real estate, and House IQ, a technology firm leveraging artificial intelligence across the home lifecycle.
The centre is expected to play a key role in building long-term research capabilities and nurturing talent in theoretical computer science in India.
