Southern Railway has delivered a standout performance in FY26, emerging as a leader across key passenger service indices. From revenue growth to occupancy and digital adoption, the zone has not only set new internal benchmarks but also outperformed most other zones under Indian Railways.
The year marks a series of firsts and best-ever achievements, reflecting a strong push towards efficiency, passenger-centric innovation, and revenue optimisation.
Revenue growth anchors performance
Southern Railway recorded originating passenger revenue of ₹8,271.47 crore in FY26, registering a robust year-on-year growth of 9.8%. The zone added a record ₹735.78 crore in incremental revenue compared to ₹7,435.69 crore of the previous fiscal.
This growth highlights improved demand capture, better pricing strategies, and efficient capacity utilization, reinforcing the zone’s commercial strength.
Driving efficiency through high occupancy
A key highlight of the year has been exceptional occupancy levels. Nearly 96% of Southern Railway’s reserved trains operated with occupancy above 75%.
Out of approximately 2.6 lakh train trips, around 2.49 lakh trips recorded strong occupancy, demonstrating the zone’s ability to align supply with passenger demand.
Further underlining its dominance, six of the top ten most occupied trains across Indian Railways originated from Southern Railway, including popular long-distance services such as the Parasuram Express and Kerala Express.
Special trains see strong demand
Southern Railway also led the nation in average passengers per trip in special trains, recording 1,312 passengers per trip, well above the national average of 894.
During the year, the zone operated 229 special trains covering 2,513 trips and carried nearly 33 lakh passengers, indicating effective planning during peak demand periods and festivals.
Tatkal and premium booking deliver revenue edge
The zone demonstrated exceptional efficiency in Tatkal quota utilisation, with over 75% seat occupancy achieved in 92% of trains, far exceeding the national benchmark.
In revenue terms, Southern Railway generated ₹267.05 crore from Tatkal bookings, surpassing its earning potential and achieving over 101% efficiency. Premium Tatkal services contributed an additional ₹594.36 crore, accounting for a significant share of Indian Railways’ total earnings in this segment.
Maximising every seat through smart booking
A standout innovation has been the effective use of current booking systems. Southern Railway achieved a remarkable 170% seat utilisation rate by converting over 5.8 million vacant seats into nearly 9.8 million passenger journeys.
This reflects a strong operational strategy focused on minimizing unused capacity and maximizing last-minute booking opportunities.
Vande Bharat leads the modern rail push
Southern Railway has also emerged as a leader in premium train services, securing the top rank in occupancy for Vande Bharat Express trains.
The Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat recorded a record-breaking occupancy of 187.78%, the highest in the country. Overall, four Southern Railway services featured among the top ten most occupied Vande Bharat trains.
Additionally, innovations in reservation systems led to a 180% surge in current bookings for these trains, alongside a near 200% jump in revenue.
Digital drive accelerates passenger convenience
Southern Railway has taken a leadership position in digital adoption, with 53.64% of unreserved ticket transactions conducted digitally, the highest across Indian Railways.
The rollout of Mobile Unreserved Ticketing System (M-UTS) at 32 halt stations and ₹324 crore worth of digital transactions at reservation counters highlight the zone’s strong push towards cashless and tech-enabled travel.
