Tim Cook is stepping down after 15 years at the helm of Apple, a brand that has remained at the centre of global tech conversations. Cook played a pivotal role in Apple’s growth, having taken over from co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011. He will be succeeded by the company’s hardware engineering chief, John Ternus.
Transition timeline and future role
Cook will continue as CEO until September 1, 2026, before transitioning to the role of executive chairman on Apple’s board. Under his leadership, Apple witnessed unprecedented growth, launching products such as the Apple Watch and expanding into services like Apple Music and Apple TV+.
A personal letter to the Apple Community
In a heartfelt letter to the Apple community, Cook reflected on his daily routine of reading emails from users across the world. He spoke about how customers shared personal stories, ranging from life-saving moments involving the Apple Watch to capturing milestone experiences, highlighting the deep emotional connection people have with Apple’s products.
Cook noted that these messages reinforced his sense of responsibility to push the company further, while also expressing profound gratitude for having led an organisation that “ignites imaginations and enriches lives.”
Passing the baton to John Ternus
Announcing the transition, Cook described John Ternus as “a brilliant engineer and thinker” who has spent 25 years building Apple’s products. He emphasised Ternus’s attention to detail and commitment to innovation, calling him “the perfect person for the job.”
Cook added that Ternus possesses the integrity and vision required to lead Apple into its next phase, expressing confidence that the company will scale new heights under his leadership.
A message of gratitude, not goodbye
Clarifying that this is not a farewell, Cook used the moment to thank Apple’s users personally. Reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to leading one of the world’s most influential companies, he acknowledged the trust and support he has received over the years.
He concluded by reiterating Apple’s enduring commitment to its users, stating that while the company strives every day to improve customers’ lives, the experience has, in turn, made his own journey deeply fulfilling.
