P A Suresh Babu, distinguished scientist at the Department of Atomic Energy and former Director (HR) at Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI) at Kalpakkam on April 22, 2026.
Mandate and strategic role
BHAVINI is tasked with the construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, as well as future fast breeder reactor projects.
Veteran with rich nuclear experience
Babu brings 37 years of distinguished experience in the nuclear power sector, covering Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs), and corporate human resource functions.
Early career and training
A mechanical engineering graduate from Government Engineering College, Thrissur (1988), he underwent nuclear training at the BARC Training School in 1989 (32nd batch). He began his career at the Madras Atomic Power Station (2 × 220 MW PHWRs), where he served in various roles for 14 years.
Key roles across nuclear projects
He later moved to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (2 × 1000 MW VVER reactors), holding several key positions, including that of Station Director.
Leadership at NPCIL
In February 2022, he was appointed Director (HR) of NPCIL by the Government of India, a position he held until taking up his current assignment.
Board and industry contributions
In addition, he has served as a board member of NPCIL, Chairman of Anushakti Vidyut Nigam Ltd, a joint venture between NPCIL and NTPC, and as a board member of Uranium Corporation of India Ltd.
Tenure and way forward
His tenure as CMD of BHAVINI will be for three years.
