Bharat Dynamics Ltd, a premier Defence Public Sector Undertaking, has achieved a significant milestone in indigenous defence manufacturing with the delivery of a production-grade Wire Guided Heavy Weight Torpedo (WGHWT) to Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) at its Visakhapatnam unit.
The event was attended by Defence Research and Development Organisation (NS&M), Director General R V Hara Prasad; BDL Chairman & Managing Director Commodore A. Madhavarao (Retd.) and NSTL Director Abraham Varughese.
Indigenous capability strengthened
BDL, as the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP), has successfully collaborated with NSTL in the realisation of India’s first indigenous production-grade wire guided heavy weight torpedo.
The torpedo has been developed in both practice and combat configurations and delivered to NSTL, marking a major step in the country’s pursuit of self-reliance in advanced naval weapon systems under the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Advanced technology integration
The system incorporates a state-of-the-art technology suite featuring advanced homing and propulsion systems, along with sophisticated search, attack and re-attack capabilities, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness.
This achievement highlights the success of collaborative efforts between Defence Research and Development Organisation (through NSTL) and BDL in building a robust indigenous defence ecosystem, supported by several industrial partners, including MSMEs.
The productionisation of such a complex underwater weapon system underscores India’s growing expertise in cutting-edge naval technologies.
