Indian Railways has approved the ₹993 crore Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project spanning 68 km under Southern Railway, aimed at easing congestion and strengthening Chennai’s suburban rail network.
The project forms part of the key Chennai suburban circular rail corridor connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam. The rail ministry said the doubling work will improve punctuality, operational efficiency and increase the frequency of suburban train services on the busy route.
Capacity Augmentation
Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project would play a major role in reducing congestion on the heavily utilised suburban corridor while supporting both passenger and freight movement.
According to the minister, the project will help improve transportation of major commodities including cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel across the corridor.
Indian Railways noted that the existing single-line section is currently operating at high capacity utilisation levels, with traffic expected to grow further in the coming years. The doubling project is expected to reduce detention time of trains and improve service reliability.
Industrial connectivity
The corridor serves several major industrial and economic hubs in Tamil Nadu, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai.
The region houses significant automobile, cement and manufacturing industries, making the route strategically important for freight transportation and industrial logistics.
The proposed Parandur Airport project located near the alignment is also expected to further enhance the importance of the rail corridor in the coming years.
Infrastructure modernisation
Indian Railways said the approval of the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project is part of its broader efforts to modernise rail infrastructure, enhance network capacity and improve operational efficiency across critical corridors.
The project is expected to strengthen suburban and freight connectivity in the region while supporting industrial growth and providing faster, safer and more reliable transportation services.
