HMT Kalamassery Ships Machine To South Africa, Boosts Global Footprint

CW Bureau ·

HMT at Kalamassery in Kerala has expanded its global footprint with the export of an NH Series machine to South Africa, signalling rising international demand for India-made precision engineering systems.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy flagged off the export dispatch during his visit to HMT’s Kalamassery facility, where he reviewed manufacturing operations and held discussions with officials of HMT, FCRI and Instrumentation Limited (IL).

Export boost for indigenous manufacturing
The export consignment to South Africa marks another milestone for HMT Kalamassery, which has been steadily securing overseas orders for precision-engineered machine tools and industrial systems.

“The export of indigenous machine tools manufactured at HMT to international markets is a proud moment for India’s manufacturing sector. It reflects the growing global acceptance of Indian engineering excellence and technological capability,” Kumaraswamy said.

Focus on strategic manufacturing
During the visit, the minister reviewed operations across the Machine Tool Division, Foundry Division and other strategic manufacturing units at the facility.

He observed the manufacturing, assembly and testing processes of CNC systems, precision machine tools, specialised engineering equipment and indigenously developed Sonar Directing Gear systems used for Indian Naval platforms.

Officials briefed the Minister on HMT’s contribution to sectors including defence, railways, aerospace, heavy engineering and advanced manufacturing.

The Minister also reviewed indigenous systems developed for naval and defence applications.

“Institutions like HMT represent the strength of India’s public sector engineering ecosystem. The technical expertise, manufacturing capability and commitment of the workforce here continue to contribute significantly towards strategic self-reliance,” he said.

Push to strengthen PSUs
Highlighting the Centre’s focus on strengthening public sector enterprises, the Minister said the government continues to modernise infrastructure, improve competitiveness and create opportunities for growth and innovation.

“Under the leadership of  Prime Minister  Narendra Modi, continuous efforts are being made to strengthen PSUs across the country, modernise infrastructure, improve competitiveness and create greater opportunities for growth, innovation and employment,” Kumaraswamy said.

The visit reinforced the Government of India’s focus on advancing indigenous technological capabilities, strengthening strategic manufacturing and supporting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
