Maruti Suzuki Earmarks ₹925 Cr For New Green Energy Initiatives By FY31

CW Bureau ·

India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India has announced plans to invest ₹925 crore in green energy initiatives by FY2030-31, while unveiling two new biogas projects aimed at strengthening its renewable energy ecosystem.

The announcement, made on World Environment Day, includes the development of a new biogas plant at the company’s Kharkhoda facility and the expansion of an existing biogas plant at its Manesar plant.

Maruti Suzuki said it will invest ₹150 crore in the two biogas projects as part of its broader strategy to reduce fossil fuel consumption and support sustainable manufacturing operations.

Kharkhoda plant to meet 20% of gas requirement
The automaker will establish a 10 tonnes per day (TPD) biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility, with commissioning planned during FY2026-27.

At full capacity, the facility is expected to mitigate approximately 9,490 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually and meet nearly 20% of the plant’s total gas requirement.

The project aligns with the government’s ‘waste-to-wealth’ mission and forms part of the company’s long-term renewable energy roadmap.

Manesar biogas capacity expanded
Maruti Suzuki has also expanded the capacity of its Manesar biogas plant from 0.2 TPD to 0.7 TPD.

The upgraded facility is expected to generate around 3.6 lakh standard cubic metres of biogas annually, helping avoid an estimated 664 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

The Manesar plant uses food waste, Napier grass and paddy straw as feedstock, with the flexibility to enhance production through the addition of cattle dung. The facility employs anaerobic digestion technology to convert agricultural and organic waste into raw biogas.

The biogas produced is used in paint shop heating operations and canteen activities, while fermented organic manure (FOM), a by-product of the process, is utilised for internal horticulture activities or supplied back to the agricultural ecosystem.

Part of broader decarbonisation strategy
The company said the projects are part of its efforts to build a cleaner energy ecosystem while reducing dependence on conventional fuels.

Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said, “Maruti Suzuki has been consistently working on initiatives aimed at reducing fossil fuel consumption and oil import dependence. In line with this, we are setting up a new 10 Tonnes Per Day biogas plant at the Kharkhoda facility as well as expanding the existing biogas plant at Manesar facility.”

He added, “At a time when the world is navigating an increasingly uncertain energy landscape, such initiatives assume greater significance. As the Prime Minister of India has called for reducing dependence on fossil fuels, the commissioning of our biogas project comes at an appropriate time. It enables us to contribute, in a modest but meaningful way, to the current national priority alongside several other ongoing efforts.”

The latest initiatives strengthen Maruti Suzuki’s renewable energy portfolio as the company advances its sustainability agenda and works toward reducing the environmental footprint of its manufacturing operations.
