Digital travel platform Agoda has reported a rise in family accommodation searches for domestic summer travel, with Puri, Wayanad and Goa emerging as the most sought-after destinations for the school holiday season.
The findings, based on accommodation search data for check-ins between May and June 2026, indicate growing interest in coastal, nature and outdoor-focused destinations compared with the corresponding period last year.
Coastal destinations gain traction
The trend coincides with the annual school vacation period, one of the few times when families can travel together for an extended duration. Agoda said families were increasingly choosing destinations that offer a mix of relaxation, outdoor experiences and opportunities to spend time together.
Odisha’s coastal town of Puri recorded the highest growth, with accommodation searches rising 68% year-on-year. The destination’s blend of spiritual heritage and beach tourism has made it a preferred choice among summer travellers.
Nature escapes attract families
Kerala’s Wayanad witnessed a 40% increase in accommodation searches compared with last year. Known for its wildlife sanctuaries, plantations and forest landscapes, the destination is drawing families seeking nature-based holidays.
Goa registered a 29% rise in searches, continuing to attract visitors with its beaches, resorts, water parks and family-friendly attractions.
Hill stations remain popular
Among adventure and wellness destinations, Rishikesh in Uttarakhand recorded a 22% increase in accommodation searches. Agoda attributed the growth to the destination’s mix of spiritual tourism, yoga retreats, riverside camps and adventure activities such as river rafting.
Traditional hill stations also continued to perform strongly. Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra recorded a 15% rise in family accommodation searches, while Ooty in Tamil Nadu saw a 13% increase compared with last year.
Intentional travel planning
Both destinations remain popular summer retreats due to their cooler climate, scenic landscapes and established tourism infrastructure.
“Summer holidays continue to be an important travel period for Indian families, and in 2026 the planning behind these trips has grown increasingly intentional. Families are exploring a broader mix of destinations, from coastal getaways and nature-focused escapes to perennial favourites,” Agoda, Country Director, Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands, Gaurav Malik, said.
Agoda said it offers access to more than six million holiday properties worldwide, along with over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 travel activities through its platform.
