Sigma Advanced Systems, a globally integrated aerospace and defence company, has secured an export contract worth $21.97 million (approximately ₹208 crore) for the manufacture and supply of 40,000 units of 155 mm M107 artillery shell bodies to a customer in North America, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion within the global defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The contract will be executed over a six-month period, with production and deliveries scheduled to be completed within the same timeframe. The order represents a strategic milestone for the company as it expands from being a fuze manufacturer to a producer of complete artillery shell components, strengthening its position in the global defence munitions supply chain.
Expansion in munitions manufacturing
The project involves the production of 155 mm artillery shell bodies, a critical structural component used in artillery ammunition. Manufacturing these shell bodies requires specialised capabilities in metallurgy, forging, machining, heat treatment and quality assurance to ensure performance and reliability under demanding operational conditions.
Sigma Advanced Systems has obtained the required export authorisation from the Department of Defence Production under the Ministry of Defence for the programme. The company said the scale of the order demonstrates its ability to undertake high-volume, mission-critical defence manufacturing projects for international customers.
Growing role in global defence supply chains
The 155 mm calibre remains the global standard for modern artillery systems and is widely used across NATO and allied military platforms. Rising global demand for artillery ammunition has increased the need for reliable manufacturing partners capable of delivering critical components at scale.
Sigma Advanced Systems, CEO & Executive Director, Sunil Kalidindi, said, “This contract reflects the confidence international customers place in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and in Sigma’s ability to deliver complex, high-precision products at scale. Manufacturing artillery shell bodies requires deep expertise in metallurgy, precision engineering, process control, and quality assurance. This order strengthens our position within the global defence supply chain and demonstrates our ability to support international customers with world-class manufacturing capabilities from India.”
Strategic significance
The company said the contract is an important milestone in its efforts to expand its presence in global defence markets. While Sigma Advanced Systems has maintained long-term relationships with major aerospace and defence OEMs, the latest order further reinforces its credentials as an international manufacturing partner for defence programmes.
The company also noted that the engagement reflects a broader shift in global supply chains, with international customers increasingly looking for dependable manufacturing partners capable of delivering critical defence products at scale.
Outlook
Sigma Advanced Systems said the order provides a strong foundation for future opportunities in ammunition manufacturing and related defence programmes. With production anchored in India, the company plans to continue investing in advanced manufacturing technologies, engineering capabilities and quality systems as it expands its participation in international aerospace and defence programmes.
As India strengthens its position as a global defence manufacturing hub, Sigma Advanced Systems aims to deepen its footprint in international markets while supporting the country’s growing defence export ambitions.
