AAIB Reports Progress In Air India AI-171 Crash Investigation After 1 Year

CW Bureau ·

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough, independent and evidence-based investigation into the crash of Air India Flight AI-171, as the country marked one year since the tragic accident that claimed hundreds of lives.

In an interim statement, the AAIB said significant progress has been made in examining technical, operational, organisational and human factors linked to the accident involving the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, while operating a scheduled flight to London.

One year since the tragedy
Marking the first anniversary of the accident, the AAIB expressed its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and acknowledged the enduring pain suffered by all those affected by the tragedy.

The bureau noted that the investigation is being conducted in accordance with the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017, and the standards prescribed under ICAO Annex 13. A preliminary report containing factual information related to the accident was released on July 12, 2025.

Extensive examination completed
According to the AAIB, the investigation team has spent the past year undertaking an extensive examination of all aspects associated with the accident.

The process has involved support from accredited representatives, technical advisers and subject matter experts from relevant organisations. Investigators have analysed aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine-related components, maintenance records, operational documents and other critical evidence linked to the crash.

The bureau said substantial progress has been achieved in gathering and reviewing technical evidence necessary to establish the sequence of events and contributing factors.

Further analysis underway
AAIB stated that evidence collected so far is currently undergoing comprehensive and integrated analysis. Additional technical evaluations and specialist examinations will continue wherever required to ensure that all conclusions are supported by verified evidence and sound scientific assessment.

The bureau emphasised that every aspect of the accident will be examined with the utmost diligence before the investigation is concluded.

Focus remains on aviation safety
Reiterating the purpose of accident investigations, the AAIB said the primary objective is to enhance aviation safety through lessons learned and safety recommendations rather than assigning blame or liability.

The bureau urged all stakeholders, including the media and the public, to avoid speculation or drawing premature conclusions while the investigation remains ongoing.

Final report after international review
AAIB said the final investigation report will be released only after completion of all investigative activities and the mandatory international review and consultation processes required under ICAO Annex 13.

The bureau reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, transparency and investigative rigour, adding that the findings and recommendations will aim to strengthen civil aviation safety and command the confidence of all stakeholders.
