APSEZ To Sell 49% Stake In Vizhinjam Port To MSC’s Entity TiL For $1.4 Bn

CW Bureau ·

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Group’s terminal arm, Terminal Investment Ltd (TiL), have signed a definitive agreement under which TiL will acquire a 49% stake in Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL) for $1.397 billion in total value of $2.85bn.

The transaction marks the third strategic collaboration between APSEZ and MSC after their successful joint ventures at Mundra Container Terminal No. 3 and Ennore.

Expansion underway

Commissioned in December 2024, Vizhinjam is India’s first deep-draft mega transshipment port with a capacity of 1.6 million TEUs. During FY26, the port handled 1.3 million TEUs.

The port is currently undergoing expansion, which will increase its handling capacity 3.5 times to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028.

Growth prospects

“Vizhinjam port has emerged as a premier transshipment hub and ramped up at an unprecedented pace, becoming the first Indian port to earn the unique distinction of crossing 2 million TEUs within 18 months of operations,” APSEZ Whole-time Director and CEO Ashwani Gupta said.

The partnership is expected to provide APSEZ with enhanced cargo volume visibility, higher Bangladesh cargo share, stronger presence on East Africa trade routes and increased relay cargo volumes.

Global operator

TiL, part of the MSC Group, is one of the world’s largest container terminal operators, with a portfolio of more than 100 container terminals across five continents and an annual throughput of over 70 million TEUs.
