ACME Cleantech Solutions Pvt Ltd (ACME Group) has signed long-term export agreements with Japan’s IHI Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company Inc. (MGC) for the supply of green ammonia and green methanol, marking one of India’s largest green fuel offtake commitments with Japan.
The agreements were signed at a ceremony held at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan in New Delhi under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
The deals are expected to strengthen India’s position as a global supplier of green hydrogen derivatives while supporting Japan’s clean energy transition and energy security goals.
Green ammonia, methanol supply
Under the agreement with IHI Corporation, ACME Group will supply 405,000 tonnes per annum (405 kTPA) of green ammonia.
The arrangement is backed by Japan’s Contract for Difference (CfD) scheme for low-carbon ammonia, administered by the country’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), which provides price support to Japanese buyers to ensure long-term commercial viability.
Separately, ACME signed a 10-year agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company for the supply of 100,000 tonnes per annum (100 kTPA) of green methanol from its Paradip facility.
The project has been designed to meet the European Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) requirements and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards for cleaner marine fuels.
Mission support
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved in January 2023 with a financial outlay of ₹19,744 crore, aims to establish India as a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
Under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme, ACME Group has been allocated a production capacity of 370,000 tonnes per annum (370 kTPA), providing the foundation for the export-oriented projects.
Government welcomes agreements
Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Union Minister, Pralhad Joshi said, “I welcome Japan’s decision to extend its CfD subsidy support to the ACME-IHI Green Hydrogen project. It reflects the growing global confidence in India’s green hydrogen ecosystem and our emergence as a trusted partner in the global clean energy transition.”
He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is creating a future-ready ecosystem by attracting global investments, building international partnerships and opening new markets for Indian green hydrogen and its derivatives.
Market confidence
Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Secretary, Santosh Kumar Sarangi said the agreements have created a market linkage with Japan for green ammonia and green methanol, strengthened investor confidence, demonstrated the commercial maturity of India’s green hydrogen sector and helped establish international green hydrogen value chains.
Japan’s Vice Minister of METI, Takehiko Matsuo, said the agreements represent a flagship outcome of the deepening clean energy partnership between India and Japan.
Strengthening green hydrogen ecosystem
The agreements are among the largest green ammonia and green methanol offtake commitments from India to Japan and are expected to reinforce long-term demand for production capacities established under the SIGHT Programme.
Senior officials from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Government of Japan, ACME Group, IHI Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company attended the signing ceremony.
