Tata Motors Ties Up With Welspun Renewable For Wind-Solar Project

CW Bureau ·

Tata Motors Ltd, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has partnered with Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd (WREPL) to co-develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project that will supply clean power to four of the automaker’s manufacturing facilities across India.

The companies have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) under which the hybrid renewable energy project will supply electricity to Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle plants in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.

Project to generate 200 million units annually
The wind-solar hybrid project is expected to generate around 200 million units (kWh) of clean electricity every year.

According to the companies, the project will help offset more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions annually, supporting Tata Motors’ efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its manufacturing operations.

The project will be developed through a co-investment model and will provide a dedicated supply of renewable energy exclusively to Tata Motors’ manufacturing facilities covered under the agreement.

Supports RE100 and net-zero goals
Tata Motors said the project marks a significant step in its clean energy transition and will accelerate progress towards its RE100 commitment by 2030, under which the company aims to source 100% of its electricity requirements from renewable energy.

The initiative also aligns with Tata Motors’ broader sustainability roadmap and its long-term ambition of achieving net-zero emissions through responsible manufacturing practices.

Strengthening green manufacturing
Tata Motors Vice President, Operations, Vishal Badshah, said the project reinforces the company’s commitment to building energy-efficient manufacturing operations.

“This project reflects Tata Motors’ continued focus on building greener and more energy-efficient manufacturing operations. The scale and integrated nature of this wind-solar hybrid solution will help us secure a reliable supply of renewable energy for key commercial vehicle manufacturing facilities while meaningfully reducing carbon emissions across operations on a sustained basis,” he said.

He added that collaborations of this nature are critical to achieving the company’s RE100 commitment and net-zero aspirations.

Welspun sees milestone partnership
Welspun Renewable Energy Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Kapil Maheshwari, described the partnership as a defining milestone for the company.

“We are not merely signing a PPA; we are co-creating a model for how India’s largest manufacturers can decarbonise and achieve net-zero and sustainability goals. We thank Tata Motors for their trust and look forward to making this one of many long and successful partnerships,” he said.

Maheshwari added that Welspun Renewable Energy remains focused on developing resilient, future-ready renewable energy infrastructure for both utility and commercial & industrial (C&I) consumers.

The partnership underscores the growing adoption of renewable energy by India’s manufacturing sector as companies accelerate efforts to reduce emissions and transition towards sustainable operations.
