Volvo Buses India, a business unit of VE Commercial Vehicles, has expanded its premium coach portfolio with the launch of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper at Prawaas 5.0, targeting India’s fast-growing long-distance passenger transport market.
The new coach combines premium seating and sleeper accommodation on a single platform, enabling operators to deploy the vehicle on both short- and long-distance routes while improving fleet utilisation and operational efficiency.
Premium travel demand gathers pace
Volvo said the launch comes as India’s intercity passenger transport sector is witnessing rising demand for safer, more comfortable and premium travel experiences. At the same time, fleet operators are looking for vehicles that can improve productivity without compromising passenger comfort.
Built on Volvo’s globally proven coach platform, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper has been developed for intercity, tourism and pilgrimage operations.
Designed for flexibility
The 15-metre coach is powered by Volvo’s fuel-efficient VEDX8 engine paired with the I-Shift automated transmission, offering enhanced drivability and fuel efficiency.
The bus accommodates 51 passengers, with 24 sleeper berths comprising 21 upper-deck berths and three rear sleeper berths, along with 27 premium lower-deck seats featuring calf support. It also provides 6 cubic metres of luggage space, making it suitable for demanding long-distance operations.
Volvo said the flexible seating and sleeper configuration enables operators to serve multiple route profiles with a single vehicle.
Passenger comfort takes centre stage
The Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper features redesigned interiors with premium seating and berth arrangements, ambient mood lighting, integrated entertainment provisions, mobile charging points and enhanced privacy features to improve the overall passenger experience.
The coach also comes equipped with an onboard kitchenette and toilet, offering greater convenience during long-distance journeys.
Safety features set new benchmark
Volvo has equipped the new coach with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance and safety technologies.
These include a 360-degree camera system, electronic mirrors using a Camera Monitor System, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and a Driver State Monitoring System that detects fatigue and driver distraction to improve operational safety.
The coach also features an Alcohol Interlock System, which prevents the vehicle from being operated if alcohol is detected, adding another layer of protection for passengers and fleet operators.
Connected fleet management
The Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper is integrated with a telematics platform that enables operators to monitor vehicle location, speed, fuel consumption, performance and operational alerts in real time.
The connected solution is designed to support predictive maintenance, improve fleet utilisation and enable data-driven operational decisions.
Evolving bus industry
VE Commercial Vehicles Chief Commercial Officer S S Gill said the Indian bus industry is evolving rapidly as passengers increasingly seek premium travel experiences while operators focus on improving productivity and operational efficiency.
He said the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper combines globally proven engineering with innovations tailored for Indian operating conditions, offering customers a premium solution built around safety, luxury and comfort.
VE Commercial Vehicles Executive Vice President, Bus Division, Suresh Chettiar said the new coach builds on the success of the Volvo 9600 platform by offering operators greater flexibility to serve both short- and long-distance routes while delivering an elevated travel experience through its premium seating, sleeper berths and advanced passenger amenities.
