Renault India Ties Up With IIT Kanpur For Next-Gen Vehicle Engineering

Renault India has entered into a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to strengthen its vehicle research and development capabilities, leveraging the institute’s state-of-the-art National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF) for advanced aerodynamic and wind-noise testing.

The collaboration underscores Renault’s commitment to developing future-ready passenger vehicles through advanced engineering, innovation and closer engagement with India’s premier research institutions.

Advanced testing for future vehicles
Under the partnership, Renault India will utilise IIT Kanpur’s National Wind Tunnel Facility to validate vehicle aerodynamics and wind-noise performance against engineering targets, enabling more precise product development and optimisation.

The collaboration combines Renault’s global engineering expertise with one of India’s most advanced automotive testing facilities to improve vehicle efficiency, safety and overall performance.

The company said the initiative reinforces India’s growing role in Renault Group’s global engineering and innovation network.

Strengthening India’s engineering ecosystem
The National Wind Tunnel Facility is India’s first state-of-the-art wind tunnel of its kind, featuring a continuous closed-jet test section measuring 3.0 metres x 2.25 metres.

The facility supports highly accurate aerodynamic evaluations at speeds ranging from 80 kmph to 280 kmph and is currently being upgraded to enable testing at speeds exceeding 400 kmph, significantly expanding its research capabilities.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) also establishes a framework covering commercial engagement, intellectual property management and confidentiality, providing a structured foundation for long-term collaboration.
