Amazon Web Services (AWS) has broken ground on a new data centre in Hyderabad, reinforcing its long-term commitment to India’s rapidly growing cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem.
The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, marking the continued expansion of the AWS (Asia Pacific) Hyderabad Region.
The new facility is expected to strengthen India’s digital infrastructure and support the rising demand for cloud computing, AI and digital services from enterprises, startups and government organisations.
Boost for Bharat Future City
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the new AWS investment would act as a catalyst for further investments into the state’s ambitious Bharat Future City project.
“The foundation stone laying for the Amazon Web Services data centre in Bharat Future City will serve as a stepping stone for a wide range of investments and businesses to come forward and invest in Bharat Future City. We are building a world-class city in Bharat Future City with the best of infrastructure,” he said.
Expanding India’s digital backbone
AWS Director of Data Centre Delivery Anurag Khilnani said the company has steadily expanded its investments in Telangana since launching its cloud infrastructure in Hyderabad in 2022.
“Since we launched AWS infrastructure in Hyderabad back in 2022, we have deepened our investment and commitment to build sustainable cloud data centre operations in Telangana to help meet the growing demands of Digital India and the India AI Mission,” he said.
Khilnani credited the Telangana government for supporting the rapid expansion of AWS infrastructure in the state.
“The support of the state government has been essential to fast-tracking the build of India’s digital backbone in Hyderabad. We look forward to continuing to invest in Telangana, strengthening the local data centre supply chain, developing the local workforce and supporting the local community to serve India’s growing digital and AI ambitions,” he added.
Over $21 billion investment planned
AWS said it plans to invest more than $21 billion in cloud infrastructure across India during the 2026-2030 period, making it one of the country’s largest global investors in AI and cloud infrastructure.
The planned investment follows Amazon’s earlier commitment of over $1.3 billion in the AWS (Asia Pacific) Hyderabad Region by the end of 2025.
The broader investment programme forms part of the $48 billion investment roadmap for India recently announced by Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy across the company’s various businesses.
Expanding cloud and AI capabilities
The new investments will expand AWS data centre capacity in Hyderabad and Mumbai, enabling businesses, startups and public sector organisations to access advanced cloud infrastructure and AI technologies.
Customers will gain access to AWS’s custom AI chips, hundreds of cloud and managed AI services, secure cloud platforms and developer tools that enable faster innovation and global scalability.
The company said the expanded infrastructure will support India’s Digital India programme, the India AI Mission and the country’s growing demand for high-performance cloud computing.
Supporting India’s digital transformation
With enterprises rapidly adopting generative AI, cloud-native applications and digital services, demand for hyperscale data centres has increased significantly across India.
AWS’s continued investments are expected to strengthen India’s position as a leading digital infrastructure hub while supporting innovation, job creation and the development of a robust AI ecosystem.
