Lupin Carves Out 2 Cancer Therapy Programmes Into New US Venture

CW Bureau ·

Global pharmaceutical major Lupin Ltd has announced the strategic spin-out of two of its oncology programmes into Kaveri Therapeutics Inc., a US-based clinical-stage oncology company, in a move aimed at accelerating the global development of targeted cancer therapies.

Independent platform for oncology development
The spin-out will be executed through Lupin Inc., the company’s wholly owned subsidiary. As part of the agreement, Kaveri Therapeutics will receive exclusive rights to develop the two oncology programmes and will advance them through global clinical trials as an independent company.

Lupin Inc. will retain a significant equity stake in Kaveri, provide seed funding, and support the transition of the programmes into the new entity. Kaveri is also expected to raise additional capital to finance its clinical development plans.

Experienced leadership team
Kaveri Therapeutics will be led by Chief Executive Officer Kristi Jones, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive known for building and scaling innovative life sciences companies.

The company’s clinical strategy will be overseen by Chief Medical Officer Dr Robert Pierce, who brings extensive clinical development expertise and will spearhead the advancement of the oncology pipeline.

Promising clinical progress
The two oncology programmes have already shown encouraging clinical momentum. According to Lupin, each programme reported positive clinical data at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meetings in 2025 and 2026, respectively, underscoring their potential in targeted cancer treatment.

The company believes the spin-out will provide greater strategic focus and access to dedicated funding, enabling faster clinical development and global commercialisation opportunities.

Bringing meaningful innovation
Lupin Chief Executive Officer Vinita Gupta said, “We are proud to have pioneered these oncology assets and look forward to advancing them through Kaveri Therapeutics. The strength of these assets, combined with Kaveri’s seasoned leadership team, positions us to accelerate the development of targeted oncology therapies with the goal of bringing meaningful innovation to patients.”

The transaction reflects a growing trend among global pharmaceutical companies to unlock value from promising research assets by creating specialised biotech companies focused on advancing innovative therapies through late-stage clinical development.
