India Cements Ltd, now part of UltraTech Cement of Aditya Birla Group, has received demand notices aggregating ₹18.95 crore from the District Collector, Tirunelveli, seeking compensation for alleged environmental clearance violations related to eight limestone mining leases in Tamil Nadu, the company informed the stock exchanges.
The company said it received the demand notices on July 21, 2026, following notices dated July 15, 2026, issued by the Tirunelveli district administration.
Compensation sought for mining leases
According to the disclosure, the demand notices seek recovery of ₹18.95 crore as compensation for the alleged extraction of limestone without prior environmental clearance during specified periods across eight limestone mining leases operated by the company.
The notices have been issued based on the Supreme Court’s judgment in Common Cause vs Union of India & Others (W.P. (Civil) No. 114 of 2014), which dealt with mining operations carried out without obtaining prior environmental clearance.
Company reviewing legal options
India Cements said it is examining the demand notices and will decide on the appropriate course of action.
“The company is reviewing the notices and will decide on further course of action. The financial impact, if any, will be to the extent of compensation demanded by the authority,” it said in its regulatory filing.
