Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) has secured an inter-state power transmission project worth about ₹8,500 crore in Andhra Pradesh, marking another significant addition to its expanding transmission portfolio and strengthening infrastructure for the state’s green hydrogen ambitions.
Awarded through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism, the project will create the transmission backbone required to supply power to proposed green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in the Visakhapatnam region, while also meeting the rising electricity demand from upcoming data centres and digital infrastructure.
Powering the green economy
The project, titled ‘Transmission System for Proposed Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Projects in Vizag Area (Phase-I)’, has been designed to support an estimated 4,500 MW of demand from upcoming clean energy projects.
The transmission network is expected to play a pivotal role as Andhra Pradesh positions Visakhapatnam as a major hub for green hydrogen production, a sector that is expected to drive India’s transition towards low-carbon industrial growth under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Besides supporting clean energy projects, the network will also cater to the fast-growing electricity requirements of the Pendurthi-Vizag corridor, which is witnessing significant investments in AI-enabled hyperscale data centres, digital infrastructure and subsea connectivity.
Expanding transmission footprint
The project will be executed through a special purpose vehicle, Vizag Power Transmission Ltd, and includes the construction of a 765/400 kV GIS substation at Pendurthi and another 765/400 kV substation at Khammam-II.
Upon completion, AESL will add 1,582 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines and 10,500 MVA of transformation capacity to its network.
This will take the company’s overall transmission infrastructure to 29,531 ckm and 1,33,675 MVA of transformation capacity. The project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months.
Strengthening order book
The latest win takes AESL’s transmission order book to more than ₹80,000 crore, reinforcing its leadership in India’s private transmission sector.
Adani Energy Solutions Ltd CEO Kandarp Patel said the project would provide the energy backbone for India’s next phase of industrial and digital growth.
He noted that the transmission system would not only support green hydrogen and green ammonia production but also strengthen grid infrastructure for the region’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
With India accelerating investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen manufacturing and AI-driven data centres, demand for high-capacity transmission infrastructure is expected to rise sharply over the coming decade. Industry experts believe projects such as the Vizag transmission corridor will be critical in ensuring reliable power supply, grid stability and industrial competitiveness.
