In a move aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of Tamil Nadu’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Indian Institute of Technology Madras has partnered with the Bureau for Facilitating MSMEs of Tamil Nadu to accelerate digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across the State’s industrial ecosystem.
The initiative, led by IIT Madras’ Center of Tech Excellence with support from a CSR grant by Walmart Global Tech, will focus on equipping MSMEs with affordable digital technologies, AI-enabled tools and Industry 4.0 capabilities without requiring significant capital investments.
Driving digital adoption
The collaboration comes at a time when India’s manufacturing sector is increasingly embracing digital technologies to improve productivity, quality and global competitiveness, while many MSMEs continue to grapple with high implementation costs, limited technical expertise and fragmented technology adoption.
A key outcome of the partnership will be the development of a Tamil Nadu MSME Digital Readiness and Adoption Index, a first-of-its-kind framework to assess the digital maturity of MSMEs across the State. The initiative will also include digital readiness assessments, technology demonstrations, capacity-building programmes and implementation support.
Building an innovation ecosystem
Beyond technology deployment, the partners aim to establish a Government-Academia-Industry innovation ecosystem anchored at IIT Madras that will facilitate the development, transfer and large-scale adoption of indigenous digital solutions.
“This partnership aims to integrate AI-enabled workflows, shop-floor digitisation and Industry 4.0 tools into the daily operations of MSMEs in Tamil Nadu,” said IIT Madras Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy. He added that the focus would be on practical, field-deployable technologies that enhance productivity, improve product quality and strengthen the global competitiveness of manufacturing MSMEs across sectors such as automotive, engineering and fabrication.
Focus on capability building
The initiative will also invest in long-term capability building by offering continuous training programmes, digital laboratories and masterclasses for entrepreneurs, supervisors and shop-floor workers. Cluster-specific diagnostics and applied research will be used to identify operational bottlenecks and develop solutions tailored to local industry requirements.
According to FaMe TN General Manager V S Venkatesan, the partnership will initially undertake extensive field engagements, including digital readiness assessments, pilot projects using IIT Madras-developed tools and the creation of practical training resources based on real industrial clusters.
The digital solutions are expected to address common manufacturing challenges such as inconsistent product quality, manual documentation and unplanned machine downtime through AI-driven anomaly detection, production analytics dashboards and smart quality inspection systems.

The collaboration signals Tamil Nadu’s growing focus on building a digitally empowered MSME sector as the State seeks to reinforce its position as one of India’s leading manufacturing hubs. By combining government support, academic expertise and industry backing, the initiative adopts an implementation-driven approach that could serve as a model for MSME digital transformation in other states.
The Center of Tech Excellence at IIT Madras has already trained more than 1,000 participants through workshops and collaborative projects and has developed AI and data analytics solutions that enable real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance and production optimisation for manufacturing units.
