Honda Motor Co has appointed Toshiyuki Yanagisawa as the new President & Chief Executive Officer of Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), effective October 1, 2026, in a leadership change that underscores India’s growing importance in the Japanese automaker’s global growth strategy.
Yanagisawa, currently an Operating Executive at Honda, heads the India Strategic Development Office and serves as the CEO of Honda Digital Innovation India Pvt. Ltd. (HDII). In his expanded role, he will simultaneously lead both HCIL and HDII, bringing Honda’s passenger vehicle and digital transformation initiatives under a unified leadership structure.
He succeeds Takashi Nakajima, who will return to Honda’s regional headquarters at Asian Honda Motor Co., Ltd. after completing his India assignment.
Leadership aligned with growth plans
The appointment comes at a crucial juncture as Honda accelerates preparations for its next phase of growth in India, one of the three markets, along with North America and Japan, that the company has identified as strategic priorities for its global business.
Honda said its India Strategic Development Office has been formulating India-specific strategies and execution plans to expand the company’s presence in the country’s rapidly evolving automotive market.
The company added that preparations for its India-focused strategic vehicle, scheduled for launch in 2028, have now entered the execution phase, signalling a shift from planning to implementation.
Familiar face for India
Yanagisawa is no stranger to the Indian automotive industry, having previously served at Honda Cars India. His earlier stint in the country has given him a deep understanding of India’s automotive landscape, consumer preferences and regulatory environment.
Industry observers believe his experience in both product strategy and digital innovation could play a key role as Honda seeks to strengthen its competitiveness in one of the world’s fastest-growing passenger vehicle markets.
Focus on long-term expansion
Honda has been recalibrating its India strategy amid intensifying competition from domestic and global automakers. The company’s renewed emphasis on India reflects both the country’s rising market potential and its growing role in Honda’s global product and technology roadmap.
By placing the head of its India Strategic Development Office at the helm of Honda Cars India, the automaker appears to be aligning local operations more closely with its long-term growth and product strategy.
Why it matters
The leadership transition signals that Honda is moving from strategy formulation to execution in India. With a dedicated India-focused vehicle planned for 2028 and greater integration between vehicle operations and digital initiatives, the company is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the country’s expanding passenger vehicle market.
