Indian Railways has approved two infrastructure projects worth ₹519 crore to strengthen rail operations and improve capacity.
The projects include remodelling of the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard and upgradation of the electric traction system on the Wadi-Raichur section.
Visakhapatnam yard upgrade
Indian Railways has approved the remodelling of the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard of South Coast Railway at a cost of ₹299 crore.
The project will improve station handling capacity, enhance punctuality and provide modern passenger amenities through additional lines, platforms and Electronic Interlocking (EI).
Visakhapatnam Railway Station handles around 80,000 passengers every day and an average of 113 trains daily.
The existing yard layout requires terminating and through trains to negotiate surface crossings, leading to detention at approach signals and reduced platform availability.
Operational efficiency
The yard remodelling will minimise surface crossings and reduce detention time.
It will improve platform occupancy and enable the station to handle more trains in the future.
Wadi-Raichur traction approved
Indian Railways has also approved a ₹220-crore project to upgrade the electric traction system from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV on the Wadi-Raichur section of South Central Railway.
The project covers a 102-route kilometre (204 track kilometre) double-line section.
Traction modernisation
The Wadi-Raichur section forms part of High Density Network (HDN) Route-7 connecting Mumbai, Pune, Wadi, Raichur, Guntakal, Kadapa, Renigunta and Chennai.
The upgraded 2×25 kV traction system will strengthen power supply and improve operational efficiency on this key corridor.
The project is expected to support higher passenger and freight traffic while enhancing the network’s capacity for future growth.
