Global aviation veteran Willie Walsh has assumed charge as IndiGo’s Chief Executive Officer, marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter as India’s major airline accelerates its international expansion and global ambitions.
Walsh, whose appointment was first announced in March 2026, assumes charge with more than four decades of experience in the global aviation industry. He will work closely with the Board and the management team to build on IndiGo’s strong operational foundation while driving the airline’s next phase of growth.
Industry veteran at the helm
Walsh is widely regarded as one of the aviation industry’s most influential leaders, having successfully led several global airlines through periods of expansion and transformation.
His aviation career began as a pilot with Aer Lingus, before he rose through the ranks to become its CEO in 2001. He later served as Chief Executive Officer of British Airways from 2005 to 2011, led International Airlines Group (IAG) between 2011 and 2020, and most recently served as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
His appointment comes at a time when IndiGo is rapidly expanding its international footprint with a growing fleet of wide-body and long-range aircraft, new overseas routes and an ambitious global network strategy.
Focus on international growth
As CEO, Walsh will be responsible for the airline’s overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on accelerating international growth, strengthening network and commercial strategy, driving operational excellence and enhancing customer experience.
He will also work with the Board and the leadership team to reinforce IndiGo’s leadership position in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline is entering its third decade with significant opportunities ahead.
