The Murugappa Group is holding its popular Madras Quiz as part of Madras Week celebrations, with this year’s edition expanding into an all-day quizzing event on August 23, 2026.
As Chennai marks its 387th anniversary, the event will carry the theme “Manasellaam Madras, Vibe-ellaam Chennai”, celebrating the city’s heritage while reflecting its evolving identity.
Schools quiz to kick off celebrations
For the first time in this year’s celebrations, the Madras Quiz for Schools will be held for students of Classes 10, 11 and 12.
The school quiz is scheduled from 10 am to 1 pm on Sunday, August 23, at The Victoria Public Hall. Participants will face questions spanning Chennai’s history, culture, landmarks and personalities.
Winning teams will receive prizes worth up to ₹20,000, while the top two teams will qualify for the Madras Quiz (Open) later in the day.
Open quiz in the afternoon
The Madras Quiz (Open) will follow in the afternoon and will be open to participants of all ages. The quiz will cover a wide range of subjects linked to the city, from old Madras to contemporary Chennai.
The winning team will receive ₹50,000 along with the Madras Quiz rolling trophy. The top three teams will receive trophies from Chola MS, besides vouchers and hampers. Teams finishing fourth to sixth will receive gift hampers and vouchers.
Special prizes will also be presented to the best women’s team and best senior citizens’ team, while audience members can participate in spot-prize contests.
Both quizzes will be hosted by veteran quizmaster Dr Sumanth C. Raman.
Celebrating Chennai through quizzing
The Madras Quiz has evolved beyond a competition into a celebration of the city’s history, culture and collective memory. The expanded format aims to bring together students, families, quiz enthusiasts and Chennai residents during Madras Week.
The event will offer participants an opportunity to explore the city’s past while engaging with the changing character of Chennai.
