Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL), a Government of Tamil Nadu enterprise, has entered the hygienic tissue paper segment with the commissioning of a ₹350 crore state-of-the-art tissue paper manufacturing facility at its Unit II campus in Mondipatti, Tiruchirappalli district.
The facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay virtually from the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors’ Meet held in Chennai.
With the commissioning of the facility, TNPL has become the first mill in South India to commence tissue paper manufacturing, marking a strategic expansion beyond its traditional pulp and paper operations.
100 tonnes a day capacity
Located at Kagitha Nagar, Mondipatti, the new facility has been established at an investment of ₹350 crore, net of GST.
Equipped with advanced technology, the plant has an installed production capacity of 100 metric tonnes per day and will manufacture four categories of premium tissue paper under TNPL’s LUMEA brand — Facial, Napkin, Towel and Toilet Tissue.
The entry into the tissue paper segment is expected to help TNPL diversify its product portfolio and tap into the growing demand for hygiene and tissue products.
Creating jobs in Tiruchirappalli
The project has created direct employment opportunities for around 150 people and is expected to contribute to industrial development and livelihood generation in the region.
The investment also aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader focus on attracting manufacturing investments, creating employment and promoting environmentally responsible industrial development.
The inauguration was attended by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana; Chief Secretary M. Saikumar; Additional Chief Secretary and Chairman & Managing Director, TNPL, Kumar Jayant; and Additional Chief Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, S. Vijayakumar, among other officials.
Expanding TNPL’s growth portfolio
The tissue paper project represents a new chapter in TNPL’s growth strategy, leveraging its existing integrated pulp and paper manufacturing capabilities to enter a value-added consumer products segment.
With the LUMEA range spanning facial, napkin, towel and toilet tissue, the new facility gives TNPL a presence across multiple categories of the hygienic tissue market.
The project also strengthens the company’s manufacturing footprint in Tamil Nadu while supporting the state’s objectives of employment generation and sustainable industrial growth.
