Vikram Solar has inaugurated its new 6 GW solar PV module manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a major destination for renewable energy manufacturing.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay virtually inaugurated the facility as part of a state-level programme held in Chennai. The facility is part of Vikram Solar’s larger greenfield campus spread across nearly 186 acres and is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 800 skilled professionals in the region.
The inauguration marks a significant milestone in Vikram Solar’s manufacturing expansion and its strategy to build large-scale, integrated solar manufacturing capabilities in India.
Integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem
The Gangaikondan facility is planned as an important building block of Vikram Solar’s long-term ambition to establish an integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem.
The company plans to progressively expand the campus beyond solar PV module manufacturing to include solar cell, wafer and ingot manufacturing, bringing several critical stages of the solar value chain under one location.
Vikram Solar said the integrated approach is aimed at increasing domestic value addition, strengthening supply-chain resilience and reducing dependence on imports across key components of the solar manufacturing ecosystem.
As part of its broader manufacturing roadmap, the company plans to establish 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by FY27, with the capacity targeted to expand further to 3 GW by FY28, according to the company.
Tamil Nadu emerges as manufacturing hub
The Gangaikondan investment further strengthens Tamil Nadu’s growing renewable energy manufacturing ecosystem and is expected to generate skilled employment while supporting ancillary industrial activity in the region.
The inauguration was attended by S. Keerthana, Industries Minister; M. Sai Kumar, Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu; S. Vijayakumar, Additional Chief Secretary – Industries; D. Karthikeyan, Principal Secretary and CMD – TIDCO; Kumar Jayant, Chairman and Managing Director – TNPL; S. A. Raman, Managing Director, SIPCOT; and Deepak Jacob, Managing Director and CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu, among other government officials.

Vikram Solar Chairman & Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary said Tamil Nadu’s strong industrial base, skilled talent and progressive manufacturing environment were key factors supporting the company’s investment in the state.
He said the company’s presence in Tamil Nadu reflected its long-term commitment to the state, local employment and building a more self-reliant clean energy value chain in India.
Beyond module manufacturing
The Gangaikondan campus is positioned to play a larger role in Vikram Solar’s expansion beyond conventional module manufacturing.
The planned integration of modules with cells, wafers and ingots could enable the company to build a more comprehensive domestic solar manufacturing value chain while supporting India’s broader renewable energy and energy-transition ambitions.
With the 6 GW module facility now inaugurated, Vikram Solar is looking to scale up its manufacturing footprint while Tamil Nadu continues to attract investments in solar, electric mobility, electronics and other clean-energy industries.
