Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his 80th Independence Day address to outline an ambitious technology and human-capital agenda for India, with Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, nuclear power, education and sports emerging as key pillars of the roadmap towards a developed economy.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister announced a target to train 1 crore youth in AI skills within one year, alongside free online coaching for competitive examinations. He also set longer-term targets for semiconductor manufacturing and nuclear power while announcing a nationwide sports talent hunt and an expanded women-led rural development programme.
The announcements underline a broader policy direction: India wants to build not only the physical infrastructure required for a technology-intensive economy, but also the talent, energy security and domestic manufacturing capabilities needed to support it.
1 crore youth to get AI skills
The most immediate announcement was the plan to skill 1 crore young people in Artificial Intelligence over the next year.
The scale of the target reflects the speed at which AI is reshaping workplaces, businesses and public services. For India, with its large young population and established IT and digital-services ecosystem, AI skilling could become an important lever for maintaining its competitiveness in the global technology economy.
The challenge, however, will be translating a numerical skilling target into industry-relevant capabilities. The effectiveness of the programme will ultimately depend on the quality of training, access to computing resources, certification, industry partnerships and the ability of trained youth to find productive employment or entrepreneurial opportunities.
Free online coaching seeks to widen access
The Prime Minister also announced free online coaching for youth preparing for various examinations.
The initiative seeks to use India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, teachers and available talent to create a nationwide network for examination preparation.
The move has a clear affordability dimension. Coaching expenditure can impose a significant burden on poor and middle-class families, particularly for highly competitive examinations.
A scalable digital coaching network could therefore help reduce the geographical and financial barriers that currently determine access to quality preparation.
Sports talent hunt begins at the grassroots
The government will also undertake a nationwide sports talent hunt for children aged 5-15 years across villages, cities and schools.
The objective is to identify promising young athletes and provide them with specialised training, particularly in Olympic disciplines where India has limited participation or qualification.
The economic significance of the initiative extends beyond medals. A stronger sports ecosystem can create opportunities across coaching, sports science, fitness, equipment, infrastructure and sports management while encouraging greater participation at the grassroots.
Civil Defence gets a technology reset
The Prime Minister announced plans to build a vibrant Civil Defence network capable of responding to modern threats.
The announcement recognises that critical infrastructure is increasingly exposed to risks that extend beyond conventional battlefield scenarios. Refineries, banking systems, data centres, factories and other strategic infrastructure could face disruptions during modern conflicts or emergencies.
