BMW India has opened bookings for the first-ever BMW i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB), marking the company’s latest move to expand its locally produced electric vehicle portfolio in India.
The luxury electric sedan will be manufactured at BMW Group’s plant in Chennai, becoming the second electric BMW model to be produced locally and the first locally manufactured electric sedan from BMW India.
Bookings are open through BMW India’s authorised dealer network, while customers can also register their interest through the company’s website.
Largest sedan in its segment
Positioned as an electric interpretation of BMW’s executive luxury sedan, the i5 LWB combines a spacious cabin and enhanced rear-seat comfort with the brand’s electric powertrain technology.
Measuring 5,175 mm in length, 2,156 mm in width and 1,520 mm in height, BMW said the i5 LWB is the largest and longest sedan in its segment.
The car comes with a 3,105 mm wheelbase, creating additional space for rear passengers and strengthening its focus on chauffeur-driven luxury.
The electric motor produces 268 hp of instantaneous power and enables the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.7 seconds.
Up to 669 km range
The i5 LWB is powered by an 81.6 kWh high-voltage battery, offering a claimed driving range of up to 669 km under the MIDC cycle on a single charge.
BMW has also adapted the sedan for Indian road conditions with an adaptive rear-axle air suspension and enhanced ground clearance. The company said the setup is aimed at delivering improved ride comfort and stability across varying road conditions while retaining BMW’s driving characteristics.
First Edition limited to 99 customers
To mark the introduction of the i5 LWB, BMW India is offering an exclusive First Edition, limited to just 99 customers.
The special edition is focused on enhancing the rear-seat experience and features a dedicated rear-seat entertainment package comprising a tablet and tablet holder.
The cabin receives BMW Individual Silver Bronze accents, Fineline open-pored fine-wood trim and a Silver Bronze inlay. A distinctive ‘FIRST EDITION’ laser engraving on the dashboard trim adds to the limited-edition character.
The First Edition is offered in a specific exterior combination of Carbon Black Metallic paint with Titanium Bronze exterior accents.
BMW deepens local EV strategy
The local production of the i5 LWB represents another step in BMW India’s electrification strategy, while also expanding the range of premium electric vehicles assembled in the country.
With its combination of long wheelbase, rear-seat-focused luxury, extended range and locally produced electric powertrain, the i5 LWB is aimed at progressive luxury car buyers seeking an alternative to conventional executive sedans.
The launch also reinforces BMW’s strategy of leveraging its Chennai manufacturing facility to bring more electric models into the Indian market.
