Sun TV Network has launched Sun NXT Shorts, a dedicated micro-drama platform integrated into its existing Sun NXT streaming ecosystem, as the media company seeks to tap the growing demand for short-form, mobile-first entertainment.
The new service targets audiences across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala with bite-sized stories designed for consumption in minutes. The launch marks Sun NXT’s strategic entry into the rapidly expanding micro-entertainment segment, which has gained traction among digital-native audiences globally.
Sun NXT Shorts combines Sun TV Network’s regional storytelling strengths with short-format digital programming. The platform will offer exclusive original series, international dubbed shorts, blockbuster movies and popular Sun TV serials, reworked into fast-paced episodes across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
The existing content has been remastered, resized and re-edited to suit shorter viewing formats, allowing audiences to experience familiar movies and television shows in a new digital format.
Among the content being reimagined are Rajinikanth-starrer Endhiran, Suriya’s Ayan and Dhanush’s Thiruchitrambalam, along with popular television serials including Ethirneechal, Kayal and Sundari.
Targeting both family viewers and Gen Z
Sun NXT Shorts is designed to leverage the existing relationship between Sun NXT and its family-oriented audience while simultaneously bringing younger digital consumers to the platform.
The company said the short-format approach will help re-engage its existing viewers while fresh content created specifically for the format will be used to attract Gen Z audiences.
The platform is also designed to deliver different viewing experiences depending on the device. Content is framed with tighter close-ups for smartphone viewing, while television screens feature wider scenes in a 4:3 format.
65,000 hours of content as a strategic advantage
Sun TV Network Executive Director Kaviya Maran, said the shift in audience behaviour across screens and towards shorter viewing sessions is creating a significant opportunity for regional entertainment platforms.
“Sun NXT Shorts is a deliberate strategic bet on that shift,” Kaviya said, adding that Sun TV Network has 65,000 hours of content, decades of storytelling equity and an established distribution network.
According to her, the strategy is not simply about following a short-form entertainment trend but about repurposing the company’s extensive content assets for the next generation of viewers.
Legacy content meets fresh originals
Sun NXT Head Rakesh CK said viewers increasingly want strong narratives but have less tolerance for lengthy introductions and set-ups.
Sun NXT Shorts will therefore combine the company’s established catalogue with fresh originals developed specifically for the short-form medium.
“This isn’t just about reformatting our library — it’s a dual play,” Rakesh said, highlighting the combination of legacy content with new stories created for the format.
The platform is intended to provide a common entertainment proposition across multiple generations and screens, while retaining the cultural and linguistic characteristics of South Indian storytelling.
Sun NXT expands digital play
The launch gives Sun TV Network an opportunity to extract additional value from its extensive content library while building a new digital entertainment proposition around shorter consumption cycles.
With multilingual programming, remastered legacy content, new originals and a large installed audience on Sun NXT, the company is positioning Shorts as a new growth avenue within its digital entertainment business.
Sun NXT Shorts is available through the existing Sun NXT application, enabling viewers to access the new short-form content within the broader streaming ecosystem
