Hindalco Industries Ltd, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned a greenfield Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) plant in Belagavi, Karnataka, marking the first domestic production of the high-value specialty alumina product.
The facility has an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes and strengthens Hindalco’s Specialty Alumina portfolio while supporting the growing demand for advanced fire-safety materials in India.
World’s only specialty alumina facility
The plant is also the world’s only specialty alumina facility to operate entirely on renewable energy, setting a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing.
PPT ATH is a high-value, halogen-free flame-retardant material used in HFFR cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints.
Supress flame propagation
In cables, it helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases, supporting safer electrical and infrastructure systems.
Demand for the material is rising with stricter fire-safety standards, growing EV and infrastructure adoption and the shift towards sustainable materials.
Capacity planned to double
The Phase 1 capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum is designed to meet almost the entire domestic demand from the wire and cable industry for safer cable applications.
The facility can be expanded to 60,000 tonnes, allowing Hindalco to increase production in line with domestic market growth.
Leaders comment
“The commissioning of our Superfine precipitated hydrate plant in Belagavi will further strengthen our leadership position and enhance our high-value Specialty Alumina portfolio in India,” said Hindalco Industries, Managing Director, Satish Pai.
“This investment reflects Hindalco’s focus on creating value, moving up the value chain and delivering advanced solutions that meet the emerging needs of customers in India and global markets,” he said.
Indigenous technology supports self-reliance
“The addition of Superfine PPT ATH strengthens our Specialty Alumina portfolio and reinforces our focus on innovation-led growth. Our InnoSafe solution enhances fire safety by retarding flame spread and suppressing smoke, enabling safer and more sustainable infrastructure,” said Hindalco Industries, CEO, Alumina Business, Saurabh Khedekar.
“As India’s first manufacturer of Superfine Precipitated Hydrate, we are proud to offer an indigenous, world-class solution that strengthens self-reliance, reduces import dependence and supports the evolving needs of the wire and cable industry,” he said.
The facility was developed through Hindalco’s “flask-to-factory” innovation journey, with the technology and R&D developed in-house from the ground up.
