The certification of a 15-metre multi-axle sleeper bus by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) marks a significant development in India’s long-distance passenger transport segment, as the industry moves towards larger, safer and more specialised bus configurations.
ICAT has issued its first compliance certificate for a 15-metre multi-axle sleeper bus under AIS-119 and AIS-153, in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR).
The certificate has been awarded to Synaty Automotive Pvt. Ltd. for its 15-metre multi-axle sleeper bus.
A milestone in bus certification
The certification is significant because the 15-metre configuration represents one of the longest permissible bus body configurations in India’s passenger transport category.
As passenger demand for comfortable long-distance road travel expands, sleeper buses are becoming an important component of inter-city mobility. The certification therefore underlines the importance of ensuring that larger passenger vehicles meet prescribed requirements for structural integrity, safety and passenger accommodation.
The certificate was formally handed over by Saurabh Dalela, Director, ICAT, to Naresh Kumar Yadav, Managing Director, Synaty Automotive Pvt. Ltd., in the presence of senior ICAT officials.
Designed for long-distance travel
Synaty’s bus has been developed specifically for long-distance passenger transportation, with engineering and design features covering structural strength, emergency safety, fire safety, passenger movement and travel comfort.
The fully sleeper variant can accommodate 42 berths, while the hybrid configuration offers 21 berths and 42 seats.
The two configurations provide operators with flexibility to address different passenger requirements while retaining the advantages of a large-format sleeper platform.
Safety takes centre stage
The certification process involved testing the vehicle against applicable requirements covering vehicle safety, structural integrity, passenger accommodation and comfort under the relevant automotive standards and CMVR provisions.
For a 15-metre multi-axle vehicle, such requirements assume particular importance because of the vehicle’s size, passenger capacity and intended use on long-distance routes.
The focus on emergency and fire safety is also relevant for sleeper buses, where passenger movement and evacuation can present different challenges compared with conventional seated buses.

He added that ICAT would continue supporting the Indian automotive industry in developing safer, more reliable and technologically advanced mobility solutions.
Scope for specialised buses
The certification comes at a time when India’s road passenger transport market is evolving beyond conventional city and inter-city buses.
Long-distance sleeper buses, premium coaches and hybrid seating-sleeper configurations can potentially offer operators more options to serve passengers travelling over longer distances.
