Hinduja flagship commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland posted a strong acceleration in domestic vehicle sales in August 2026, with total sales rising 43% year-on-year to 19,438 units, from 13,622 units in August 2025. The numbers point to a broad-based recovery in commercial vehicles, led overwhelmingly by medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) trucks.
The company’s M&HCV truck sales surged 60% to 10,285 units in August from 6,426 units a year earlier. The segment accounted for nearly 53% of Ashok Leyland’s domestic sales during the month and contributed 3,859 units of the overall 5,816-unit year-on-year increase.
The second major growth engine was the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, where sales increased 25% to 7,030 units from 5,631 units. LCVs contributed another 1,399 units to the overall increase.
M&HCV buses also grew, though at a more moderate pace, with domestic sales rising 36% to 2,123 units from 1,565 units.
Trucks emerge as the growth engine
The August numbers indicate a decisive shift in the composition of Ashok Leyland’s domestic sales. M&HCV trucks grew much faster than the company’s overall portfolio, while buses and LCVs provided additional support.
M&HCV truck sales of 10,285 units in August were also 31% higher than the July level, which stood at 7,577 units based on the company’s April-August cumulative numbers. LCV sales increased around 5% sequentially, while M&HCV bus sales rose about 9%.
As a result, domestic total vehicle sales increased about 19% sequentially from the implied July level of 16,308 units to 19,438 units in August.
Five-month performance remains healthy
For April-August 2026, Ashok Leyland’s domestic sales stood at 83,720 units, up 22% from 68,350 units in the corresponding period last year.
M&HCV trucks remained the principal contributor, with cumulative sales rising 31% to 42,945 units. LCV sales were up 24% at 32,834 units, while M&HCV buses were the only weak spot, declining 11% to 7,941 units.
The bus decline is therefore the key blemish in an otherwise strong five-month performance.
Exports add further momentum
Including exports, Ashok Leyland sold 21,038 vehicles in August, up 38% from 15,239 units a year ago.
M&HCV truck sales, including exports, jumped 60% to 10,748 units, while LCV sales rose 25% to 7,319 units. M&HCV bus sales increased 12% to 2,971 units.
For April-August, total sales including exports rose 20% to 89,391 units. M&HCV trucks registered a 32% increase, while LCVs grew 23%. However, cumulative M&HCV bus sales fell 17%, indicating that the bus segment continues to lag the broader commercial vehicle recovery.
