Western Carriers (India) Ltd, a 4PL logistics company, has secured the development and operations of the General Cargo Terminal (GCT) at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System (KDS).
The terminal will handle containers and other cargo under the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA). Western Carriers will operate the terminal for 15 years.
Terminal to strengthen eastern logistics
The development is expected to strengthen logistics infrastructure in Eastern India. SMPA is a key gateway to the region, with connectivity through road, rail and inland waterways.
The Kolkata Dock System is connected to the Eastern Railway network through the Sealdah and Budge Budge sections. This supports multimodal cargo movement.
Development to cost ₹13.68 crore
The terminal is already operational. Western Carriers will immediately begin the next phase of development to increase cargo handling capacity and improve operational efficiency.
The company will also expand the range of services offered through the terminal.
Focus on multimodal connectivity
The Port Authority has initially estimated the civil infrastructure investment at ₹13.68 crore. The investment could be revised as the project progresses.

“Situated at one of Eastern India’s key trade gateways, the terminal offers significant opportunities to enhance cargo handling capabilities and strengthen multimodal connectivity,” he said.
“Our focus will be on driving operational excellence, expanding service offerings, and creating long-term value for customers and stakeholders,” he said.
