BEML Ltd is stepping up its presence in the defence and aerospace sectors, pursuing opportunities in high-impact domains as it seeks to evolve from a platform manufacturer into a comprehensive systems integrator.
In his message to shareholders in the company’s Annual Report 2026, BEML Chairman & Managing Director Shantanu Roy said the company is strategically aligned with national priorities in defence and aerospace and is actively pursuing opportunities across advanced mobility, artillery, armoured platforms, aerospace structures and unmanned systems.
Key initiatives include overhauling Armoured Recovery Vehicles and High Mobility Vehicles to extend their lifecycle and enhance operational readiness, supplying platforms for advanced gun systems to support artillery modernisation, and developing Futuristic Armoured Combat Vehicles and Light Armoured Multi-purpose Vehicles for next-generation battlefield requirements.
“These ventures are expected to significantly boost revenue growth while reinforcing your company’s role as a trusted partner in India’s defence ecosystem,” Roy said.
The company has also created a new Strategic Business Unit (SBU), Strategic Systems, with a mandate to focus on end-to-end integration of advanced defence platforms. The move is aimed at enabling BEML to offer holistic solutions rather than standalone products as it strengthens its role in India’s defence modernisation programme.
Indigenous powertrain capabilities
BEML has marked a major milestone in engineering innovation with the successful development of a 1,500 HP engine, aimed at strengthening self-reliance in critical powertrain technology.
The first engine was built and successfully fired during 2024, while advanced performance calibration is progressing at a globally renowned original design house in the UK.
The company has also indigenously developed a 12×12 Strategic Weapon Carrier Vehicle, a platform that was previously imported. During the year, two such vehicles were supplied to the Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), demonstrating BEML’s capability to deliver mission-critical platforms to the Ministry of Defence.
Another major development was the design and development of the Light Armoured Multi Purpose Vehicle, which offers enhanced protection, mobility and versatility for modern battlefield requirements.
Expanding aerospace footprint
BEML is simultaneously building a strong pipeline of aerospace opportunities spanning missile sub-systems, aircraft and helicopter structures, unmanned aerial systems, and precision manufacturing for nationally important space programmes.
The company manufactures fuselage structures and airframe assemblies for the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) programme, besides producing light alloy structures for space missions and developing missile casings.
It also manufactures precision-machined airborne components for aircraft platforms and designs and supplies Ground Handling and Support Equipment for fighter aircraft.
BEML is further developing capabilities in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) through strategic partnerships, while participating in future aerospace programmes involving advanced aerostructures and next-generation aerospace systems.
The company is collaborating with Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private sector partners and technology providers across several aerospace and missile programmes as it seeks to tap emerging domestic and global opportunities.
Bengaluru facility to support global aerospace ambitions
To support its export-oriented growth strategy and deepen engagement with global aerospace original equipment manufacturers, BEML has established a warehouse facility at the Aerospace SEZ Park in Bengaluru.
The facility is intended to provide warehousing, logistics and allied support services, enabling more efficient supply-chain management and smoother integration with international aerospace manufacturing ecosystems.
BEML said these initiatives are aimed at positioning the company as a comprehensive aerospace manufacturing and systems integration partner catering to both domestic and global markets.
The company’s expansion comes against the backdrop of the government’s intensified focus on building a self-reliant defence ecosystem under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The expansion of the Positive Indigenisation List to more than 5,000 items, along with simplified procurement processes under DAP 2020 and DPM 2025, has accelerated indigenisation and reduced dependence on imports.
For FY2026-27, the defence budget reached a record ₹7.85 lakh crore, with ₹1.39 lakh crore earmarked for domestic procurement, providing a significant opportunity for Indian defence manufacturers such as BEML.
