Maruti Suzuki India has crossed the milestone of 1 million (10 lakh) cumulative vehicle dispatches through its in-plant railway sidings at Hansalpur in Gujarat and Manesar in Haryana, strengthening its shift towards rail-based and more sustainable vehicle logistics.
Of the 1 million vehicles dispatched through the dedicated facilities, around 7.9 lakh vehicles were dispatched through the Gujarat railway siding, while the Manesar siding accounted for approximately 2.1 lakh vehicles.
Milestone achieved in three years
The milestone has been achieved in just three years and five months since the Gujarat railway siding commenced operations in March 2023. The Manesar railway siding became operational in June 2025.
Maruti Suzuki is the first and only passenger vehicle OEM in India to have in-plant railway sidings at two of its manufacturing facilities.
The dedicated sidings enable vehicles to be loaded onto trains within the manufacturing plants, eliminating the need to transport finished vehicles by road to an external railway station or terminal.
Rail dispatches cross 3 lakh in current fiscal
Maruti Suzuki said its rail-based vehicle dispatches have crossed 3 lakh vehicles in the current fiscal year up to August 31, 2026.
The Gujarat and Manesar in-plant railway sidings together contributed 70% of the company’s total rail-based vehicle dispatches during the period.
The company said the shift from road to rail has helped avoid greenhouse gas emissions, reduce fuel consumption and ease road congestion.
Rail share rises to 26.5%
Maruti Suzuki’s share of rail-based vehicle dispatches has increased from 5% in FY2014-15 to 26.5% in FY2025-26, reflecting the company’s growing use of rail for transporting finished vehicles.
Maruti Suzuki India, Managing Director & CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, said, “Reaching one million cumulative vehicle dispatches through our in-plant railway sidings marks a landmark achievement in our green logistics journey. Developed under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, these sidings demonstrate how integrated multi-modal infrastructure can deliver both operational efficiencies and environmental benefits.”
He added that the two facilities are making progress in scaling up rail-based vehicle transportation, with the company targeting a 35% share of rail-based dispatches by FY2030-31.
Kharkhoda siding to expand rail network
Maruti Suzuki plans to continue investing in rail infrastructure, including an in-plant railway siding at its new Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana.
The company said the planned infrastructure will improve the efficiency of its sustainable logistics network and support India’s Net Zero ambitions.
Since FY2014-15, Maruti Suzuki has cumulatively dispatched more than 3.3 million (33 lakh) vehicles by rail. Of this total, 1 million vehicles have been dispatched through the company’s in-plant railway sidings at Gujarat and Manesar, while the balance was transported using loading terminals located outside its manufacturing facilities.
An in-plant railway siding is a dedicated rail terminal located within a manufacturing facility, allowing finished vehicles to be loaded directly onto trains after production. This eliminates the requirement for trucks to transport vehicles from the plant to the nearest railway station or external loading terminal.
