IITM Deep-Tech VC Fund Completes First Close, Targets ₹1,000 Cr Corpus

CW Bureau ·

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced the first close of its deep-tech venture capital fund, marking a significant step towards addressing the shortage of patient capital for technology-intensive startups in India.

The IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund I, launched by IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures, is targeting a corpus of ₹600–1,000 crore. The fund is designed to provide long-term capital, technical mentorship and access to institutional networks to deep-tech startups emerging from or supported by the IIT Madras ecosystem.

The first close was announced at Sangam 2026, the annual alumni conference of the IIT Madras Alumni Association, held in Bengaluru on September 26.

Alumni commitments cross ₹150 crore
The fund has attracted strong interest from the IIT Madras alumni community, with investments from alumni exceeding ₹150 crore.

IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti said the venture capital fund was aimed at supporting promising startups through the development phase and helping them scale into larger technology companies.

“Viksit Bharat 2047 as envisaged by Hon’ble Prime Minister will be a Startup Nation. This VC Fund is a humble attempt by IIT Madras and Unicorn India to support promising startups cross their respective valleys of Hope and rise up to become an Unicorn,” Kamakoti said.

Fund targets 24–30 deep-tech companies
The fund is expected to support around 24–30 companies, with a focus on IP-led and engineering-intensive businesses.

IIT Madras Research Park & Incubation Cell Group CEO Natarajan Malupillai said deep-tech startups required appropriately structured patient capital alongside research capabilities and industry partnerships.

“This 600+ cr IITM Unicorn Fund will support 24-30 companies that will be support India’s growth agenda and also win global acclaim,” Malupillai said.

He said the initiative would also seek to strengthen India’s technology capabilities, build greater self-reliance in critical sectors and support the country’s position in frontier technologies.

Focus on strategic technology sectors
The fund will focus on startups working on deep technologies with strong intellectual property and engineering requirements.

Its areas of focus include robotics, space technology, defence technology and semiconductors, with the investment strategy aligned with India’s strategic technology priorities.

The majority of the portfolio will target early-stage companies that have reached Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3–4, indicating that the technologies have moved beyond basic research towards experimental validation.

Around 60% of the corpus will be deployed to build the portfolio, while the remaining capital will be reserved for follow-on investment rounds.

The fund has been structured with a 10+2-year investment horizon, reflecting the longer technology development and commercialisation cycles typically associated with deep-tech ventures.

IIT Madras to work with Unicorn India Ventures
IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures will jointly work on strategic portfolio construction under the partnership.

A significant portion of investments is expected to come from the broader IIT Madras ecosystem, while the remaining investments will be sourced from India’s wider deep-tech startup ecosystem.

The initiative follows IIT Madras’ announcement at Sangam last year of its plans to create a dedicated venture capital fund for deep-tech startups.

The institute said the fund was conceived to provide an investment partner capable of working closely with its research, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem and helping promising technologies transition into scalable products and companies.

Alumni participation strengthens innovation ecosystem
IIT Madras Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam said the fund would provide alumni an opportunity to participate directly in the growth of the institute’s innovation ecosystem.

“As alumni and alma mater, our success stories are deeply intertwined,” Mahalingam said.

He said the fund could help bridge the patient-capital gap faced by deep-tech startups, while sustained collaboration between alumni and the institute could strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem.

Sangam 2026, the seventh edition of IITMAA’s annual conference, is being held in collaboration with IIT Madras under the theme ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat – Building a Self-Reliant India’. The conference brings together alumni, faculty, students, industry leaders and other stakeholders to discuss technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and India’s next phase of growth.
