Jaguar has unveiled the new Jaguar Type 01, marking a major milestone in the luxury brand’s shift towards an all-electric portfolio and its wider repositioning within JLR’s House of Brands strategy.
The four-door GT, unveiled in New York, is described by JLR as its most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar to date.
Built on JLR’s bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), the Type 01 is scheduled to enter production in 2027, with customer orders expected to open early next year.
Type 01 targets high-performance luxury segment
The Type 01 will feature an 850-volt electrical architecture and a 118 kWh usable battery, delivering an expected EPA range of up to 400 miles.
The electric GT will offer up to 1,030 PS of power and 1,365 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds.
With 350 kW rapid DC charging, the vehicle can add up to 200 miles (321 km) of range in 13 minutes. Sustained highway-speed range is expected to reach up to 320 miles.
The specifications position the Type 01 at the intersection of long-distance electric touring and high-performance luxury motoring.
Jaguar becomes uniquely all-electric
The launch is the latest step in a strategy JLR first outlined for Jaguar in 2021, with the brand being positioned distinctly within the wider portfolio that also includes Range Rover, Defender and Discovery.
While JLR plans to maintain a mix of internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid and battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrains across its brands, Jaguar is being positioned as uniquely all-electric.
JLR is targeting double-digit growth over the next five years, with the strategy built around three key areas: brand-led growth through different customer segments, greater propulsion flexibility across the wider portfolio and a stronger focus on North America as a priority growth market.
£11.5 billion invested in next-generation vehicles
JLR announced a £15-18 billion five-year investment programme in 2024. Since then, the company said it has invested £11.5 billion in engineering, design and manufacturing for its next-generation vehicles, with most of the investment going into the UK.
The Type 01 has been designed, engineered and will be manufactured in the UK.
Production will take place at JLR’s Solihull plant using the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture. Electric Drive Units and battery packs will be manufactured in Wolverhampton, while pressed body panels will be produced at Halewood in Merseyside.
Production-line work at Solihull is at an advanced stage, with manufacturing scheduled to begin in 2027.
Jaguar investment supports UK manufacturing
The investment in Solihull and other UK facilities is also supporting the transition of JLR’s workforce towards electric vehicle manufacturing.
Nearly 9,000 employees at the Solihull site have been retrained to build electric vehicles, while another 1,500 employees have been trained across JLR’s wider West Midlands operations.
Jaguar production is also expected to support businesses across the UK automotive supply chain, including the wider JLR supplier network in the West Midlands, which sustains around 60,000 jobs.
Jaguar targets new generation of customers
JLR, Chief Executive Officer, PB Balaji, said, “The unveiling of Type 01 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Jaguar. Combining British heritage, bold creativity, advanced technology and groundbreaking engineering, it reflects our ambition to create objects of desire that will help us invite a new generation of clients into Jaguar’s loyal and passionate customer base.”
He said the vehicle, designed, engineered and built in the UK, would play a role in strengthening JLR’s House of Brands strategy while supporting long-term investment in British innovation, manufacturing and skills.
The Type 01 represents Jaguar’s first major production vehicle under its new all-electric strategy, with the company seeking to use the model to redefine its position in the luxury market.
