Renault India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renault Group, has announced an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 km/litre for its upcoming Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160, positioning the SUV as a fuel-efficient alternative for customers seeking performance without the need for external battery charging.
Bookings for the new model open on October 9, with customers able to reserve the vehicle for ₹21,000 through the company’s official website or authorised dealerships. The SUV will make its official market debut and full reveal in India on October 17, 2026.
The launch marks Renault’s first introduction of its E-Tech strong-hybrid technology in India under its futuREady roadmap, signalling a new phase in the company’s electrification strategy for the domestic market.
Hybrid technology targets fuel efficiency and performance
The new Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160 combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. The powertrain delivers a combined output of 160 PS, while an intelligent multi-mode transmission manages the interaction between the combustion engine and electric motors according to driving conditions.
The system can operate on electric power under suitable conditions, recover energy during braking and deceleration, and switch between electric and petrol propulsion as required. The battery charges while the vehicle is being driven, eliminating the need to connect it to an external charging point.
The claimed fuel efficiency of 29 km/litre is a key selling point in a market where running costs remain an important consideration for SUV buyers. The ARAI certification provides a standardised benchmark, although actual mileage will vary depending on driving conditions, traffic, terrain and driving style.
Renault targets diesel SUV buyers
The new Duster’s positioning highlights the growing competition among petrol, diesel and electrified powertrains in India’s SUV market.
Diesel SUVs have traditionally attracted buyers looking for a combination of torque, performance and fuel efficiency, particularly for long-distance driving. Renault is seeking to offer an alternative through its strong-hybrid technology, which combines a 160 PS output with the claimed 29 km/litre fuel efficiency.
Unlike a conventional electric vehicle, the strong hybrid does not depend on access to charging infrastructure. This could make it attractive to customers who want some of the benefits of electric propulsion but prefer the convenience of a conventional refuelling system.
However, the commercial appeal will also depend on the vehicle’s final price, equipment levels and real-world fuel consumption. Renault has yet to disclose the full details ahead of the October 17 reveal.
First E-Tech model under Renault’s India roadmap
The Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160 will be the first E-Tech model introduced in India under Renault’s futuREady roadmap. The move brings the company’s strong-hybrid technology, already established in Europe, into a market where manufacturers are exploring multiple routes to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Renault Group India Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Francisco Hidalgo said the company wanted to combine performance and fuel efficiency without requiring customers to charge the vehicle externally.
The introduction of the strong-hybrid Duster could give Renault an additional option in the competitive SUV segment, particularly among buyers prioritising fuel economy but unwilling to compromise on power or everyday usability.
The October 17 debut is expected to provide greater clarity on pricing, features and the model’s positioning in India’s SUV market.
