Tata Motors, Stellantis Expand Tie-Up To Make Vehicles For Global Markets

CW Bureau ·

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV) and Stellantis India have signed a definitive agreement to expand their strategic partnership into advanced vehicle technology and architecture, with India emerging as a development and manufacturing base for vehicles targeting more than 50 global markets.

Under the agreement, TMPV will provide Stellantis access to its advanced product technology and vehicle architecture. Stellantis will leverage these capabilities through its product development and engineering expertise in India to develop vehicles tailored to different customer preferences, regulatory frameworks and operating conditions across international markets.

The vehicles developed under the collaboration will be manufactured in India by Fiat India Automobiles Pvt Ltd (FIAPL), the 50:50 joint venture between TMPV and Stellantis.

The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026, which explored opportunities for collaboration in manufacturing, engineering and supply chains in India and overseas.

The latest development formalises a specific product technology and vehicle architecture collaboration, potentially strengthening India’s role in the global automotive supply chain.

India engineering capabilities to support global expansion
The partnership will combine Tata Motors’ vehicle technology and architecture with Stellantis’ product development capabilities and international market presence.

The arrangement is intended to use India’s engineering talent and manufacturing scale to develop competitive vehicles for international markets while expanding the export potential of the Indian automotive industry.

For Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, the agreement provides an opportunity to extend the application of its technology and vehicle architecture beyond its own product portfolio.

For Stellantis, access to Tata Motors’ capabilities could support the development of vehicles suited to diverse markets, while using India as a base for engineering and manufacturing.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Managing Director and CEO Shailesh Chandra said the partnership had developed over more than two decades on the foundation of mutual trust and complementary strengths.

He said the agreement marked an important step in extending the relationship into advanced vehicle technology and architecture, reflecting the competitiveness of Tata Motors’ capabilities.

Chandra added that the collaboration offered an opportunity to combine the strengths of both companies to develop vehicles engineered and manufactured in India for domestic and international customers.

Stellantis seeks to strengthen India’s strategic role
Stellantis Asia-Pacific Region Chief Operating Officer Tianshu Xin said partnerships were central to the company’s strategy for creating value across the Asia-Pacific region.

Combining Tata Motors’ capabilities in India with Stellantis’ global product development expertise and market reach would help the companies develop competitive vehicles and expand exports, he said.

Xin added that the agreement reinforced India’s growing importance as a strategic manufacturing and development hub for Stellantis.

The focus on more than 50 global markets means the vehicles developed under the arrangement will need to address a broad range of customer expectations, regulatory requirements and operating conditions.

However, the companies have not disclosed the specific vehicle models, investment commitments, production volumes or export timelines under the agreement.

Fiat India Automobiles to manufacture vehicles
Manufacturing under the collaboration will take place at Fiat India Automobiles Pvt Ltd, the joint venture equally owned by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis.

The manufacturing arrangement builds on the companies’ existing industrial relationship and provides a framework for translating their technology collaboration into vehicles for international markets.

The agreement also extends the scope of the partnership beyond the manufacturing, engineering and supply-chain opportunities explored under the February 2026 MoU.

By linking vehicle architecture, engineering and production within India, the companies aim to improve their ability to develop products for multiple markets while leveraging the country’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Stellantis’ global portfolio adds to partnership potential
Stellantis operates a portfolio of 14 automotive brands, including Jeep, Citroën, Fiat, Peugeot, Opel, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Dodge, with a presence across Europe, North America, South America, West Asia, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

Its international product development expertise and market reach, combined with Tata Motors’ technology capabilities and Indian manufacturing base, provide the foundation for the expanded collaboration.

The agreement comes amid efforts by global automakers to optimise engineering and manufacturing networks and use established production hubs to serve multiple international markets.

For India, the partnership could strengthen the country’s position in global automotive development and exports by combining domestic vehicle technology with an international automaker’s product engineering capabilities and market access.

The commercial impact will depend on the vehicles selected for development, the markets targeted and the production and export plans the companies establish as the collaboration progresses.
