Vimag Labs Starts Manufacturing In Haryana, Plans ₹50-Cr Investment

CW Bureau ·

Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup Vimag Labs has commenced manufacturing motor and control systems at its first production facility in Jhajjar, Haryana, and is planning a phased investment of around ₹50 crore to expand its manufacturing capabilities in India.

The company has already exported its first production batch from the facility at Met City, marking its transition from technology development and validation to commercial manufacturing.

The proposed investment will be deployed in phases, depending on customer traction, production programme requirements and demand for its products. Vimag is building a manufacturing network designed to scale up to 10,000 motor and control systems a month as customer volumes increase.

Initial focus on mid-power systems
The Jhajjar facility currently spans 10,000 sq. ft., with the capacity to expand to approximately 20,000 sq. ft. The initial manufacturing phase will focus on mid-power motor and control systems for electric mobility and other electrified applications.

The facility also manufactures and assembles propulsion systems, including the company’s proprietary magnet-free motor technology. Its production infrastructure includes clean-room areas, digitally connected manufacturing systems, Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled monitoring, traceability systems and automated production lines.

The company aims to establish a scalable manufacturing platform that combines advanced motor technology with standardised production processes and quality control.

Vimag is also evaluating additional manufacturing locations and capacity while developing a network of manufacturing, component, tooling and industrialisation partners across India. The network is intended to serve both domestic and international customers.

High-power systems planned
Vimag Labs Co-founder and CEO Manish Seth said the commencement of manufacturing marked an important transition for the company towards industrialisation and serial production.

The company is planning around ₹50 crore of investment across its manufacturing expansion, with the timing and scale of deployment linked to customer programmes and product requirements, he said.

The first production batch has already been exported, demonstrating that the Jhajjar facility has entered commercial manufacturing.

Vimag plans to expand into high-power motor and control systems rated at 570 kW and above as customer programmes mature. This will require additional manufacturing, testing and industrialisation infrastructure.

Capacity additions across locations will be aligned with customer demand and product mix. The company is working with customers and industry partners across multiple vehicle and application segments to support its current programmes and future production requirements.

100-150 jobs expected
The manufacturing expansion is expected to generate approximately 100 to 150 direct and indirect employment opportunities across manufacturing, quality control, testing, engineering, supply chain and operations.

Local recruitment is expected to form an important part of the company’s workforce expansion as production scales up.

However, the pace of capacity addition and employment generation will depend on the development of customer programmes and the company’s manufacturing requirements.

₹42 crore Series A funding
Vimag Labs recently raised $5 million in a Series A funding round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate.

The company has also signed a manufacturing memorandum of understanding with Jendamark Pvt. Ltd. to support the production scale-up of its VMSM platform.

Separately, Vimag has secured an exclusive US technology licensing, manufacturing and commercialisation agreement for a production-ready, bidirectional high-voltage inverter platform capable of operating at up to 1,000 volts.

The agreements and manufacturing partnerships are expected to support its efforts to expand production capabilities and serve customers across geographies.

Magnet-free motor technology
Vimag Labs is a Bengaluru-based deep-tech company developing electric motors through its patented VMSM platform, which replaces rare-earth permanent magnets with software-defined magnetic fields.

The technology is designed to deliver performance comparable to or better than conventional permanent-magnet motors across mobility, industrial and defence applications.

By developing a manufacturing base in India, the company aims to industrialise its technology and build production capabilities for domestic and global markets.

The Jhajjar facility is the first step in this strategy, with further investment and expansion linked to customer demand and the maturity of commercial programmes.
