Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Indian engineering and construction major, has commenced initial activities for the new Tashkent International Airport in Uzbekistan after receiving a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) from the public-private partnership (PPP) consortium developing the greenfield project.
The LNTP follows the execution of an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awarded to L&T for building the passenger terminal and associated landside infrastructure.
L&T’s Public Spaces, Airports & Health (PAH) business vertical has begun initial engineering, detailed design, planning, procurement preparation and other pre-construction activities. Full-scale construction at the site will start after the consortium issues a Notice to Proceed (NTP), subject to the fulfilment of agreed contractual conditions.
Airport designed for 17 million passengers
L&T’s scope covers the construction of a passenger terminal and associated landside facilities designed to handle approximately 17 million passengers annually.
The work includes site grading, road infrastructure, structural works, architectural finishes, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services, utilities and the installation of advanced airport systems.
The greenfield airport is envisaged as a major aviation gateway for Uzbekistan, strengthening connectivity between East and West and North and South. The project is a key component of the country’s long-term transport infrastructure strategy, with ambitions to establish Uzbekistan as a regional hub for passenger, cargo and logistics traffic.
L&T strengthens global airport infrastructure portfolio
L&T said the project reinforces its position in the airport infrastructure segment and demonstrates its ability to execute large and complex EPC contracts across international markets.
Larsen & Toubro’s Senior Vice President and Head of Buildings Infrastructure Sthaladipti Saha said the execution of the project marked a significant milestone in the company’s global infrastructure EPC portfolio.
Saha said the airport would play a pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity and supporting Uzbekistan’s ambition of becoming a leading aviation hub. He added that L&T was committed to delivering a world-class airport meeting high standards of quality, safety and sustainability.
L&T’s PAH business vertical has a track record of executing airport, public space and healthcare infrastructure projects in India and overseas.
The commencement of preliminary activities marks the first step towards executing the terminal and landside infrastructure package, with the start of full construction dependent on the issuance of the NTP.
